Did a new enclosure looks way more cleaner than the first one, but again just finished it up but its already dark out. Thats the most i could get with interior lights

I've been looking at doing this type of integration as well. I found a nice little Youtube video that talks about some accessories. Did you use these for the connectivity side?

here are a few questions:
1) are the inputs (i.e. aux input, lightning cable input, SIM card input) built into the screen. Such that once you remove the aluminum backing and bezel you can still use these?
2) what did you do to the home button?
3) have you unlocked your iPad (i would suggest that you do)?
4) have you considered using iSimple to power your ipad and use the OEM radio once you do?

1) My iPad is wifi and i just tether it through my iPhone, but if you had the gsm/cdma you still could use the simcard. All the ports Sim, AUX, lightning are part of the ipad motherboard (which is about quarter of the size of ipad) which are connected by flex cables and are somewhat flexible and you can manipulate location once the cover is off. Also there is a company in china that can make custom flex cable extensions and virtually you can place inputs anywhere in the car, besides the lightning its part of the motherboard. (I ordered extension flexes for cameras). I placed lightning and aux outputs to the back of the cubby compartment. Also you have to connect the battery ipad wont turn on without it, but the battery fits perfectly in the cubby

2) Well home button is activated by gestures i can pinch screen with 4 fingers to exit app, or use 3 fingers to slide screen up to get to the multitasking menu. There are so many other options and you can make custom gestures it all comes with ios 6, and ios 7 will only be better. Also i wired a simple button from radioshack to lighning cable, and when i press it i can turn iPad on, or wake it up from sleep. I put the button by cupholder. In reality if you really need home button its possible to run an actual button to the steering wheel right bellow volume control buttons, but its to much soldering.

3) Yea its jailbroken, I got the f.lux app which dims the screen in warm color once the sun is down. There so much more stuff you can do with jailbroken ipad and make it even more car friendly. Also voice recognition works well unless the fan is blasting. So if you want to send a message to someone just activate siri and talk

4) I dont really want to use iSimple because I have aftermarket head unit which i still have to make to work with ipad, and once i get that done I will be able to control music with steering wheel through the headunit.

Nice, take some shots of the wired home button near the cup holder, id love to see it. Also do you have the website for the flex cable extentions?

Has anyone used the iSimple gateway for their iPad? just wondering if it'll work with it, especially if itll let you use your steering wheel control with it

I dont think they have a website, but heres their skype name sunnytechnaqing. And the button is not hooked up yet, i will hook it up after i figure out my situation with the headunit. On iSimple website it says that it works with the ipad so i guess you can use that too.

No offense but I really really dislike the black cloth/foam bezel you have around the screen. If you could enclose it in fiberglass that was color matched with the rest of the dash it would look amazing, but as of now its appearance is a bit of a turn off for me.

You effort and idea behind this project though is outstanding. Keep moving forward with it, you'll definitely get to where this project needs to be!

Yes no offense taken, that's what I'm working on, the frame is temporary, this is too good of a car to have unprofessional project on it. I actually got inspired by 2013 genesis coupe navigation and I'm trying to do something similar in a few weeks, my goal is to make custom fiberglass frame to match radio bezel that would look like something that came from the factory. This was my first fabrication job so I didn't expect myself to be what I pictured, but hopefully after a few trials Ill get there, just watch once I feel like the whole iPad thing is 100% complete I will create separate thread with pictures of the entire project. Also I faced a problem of overheating, when leaving car on sun IPad gives error message that it's too hot so hopefully my new motherboard housing and tints will solve it.

Good stuff! Should consider windshield tint if you're not as most heat/sun light enters through there. I'll get mine done soon

Read from beginning to end. This is exactly the type of project that allows people to realize their potential. Great work.

I do however have some questions, but I will begin with a bit of a preface:
I am looking to do the exact same type of integration, including the cameras (front by dash to record and rear by the bumper to use for parking assist). I have in mind doing a system that would integrate to the stock Bose system, via auxiliary cable. The mount should ideally be removable in order to update apps, songs, etc. the iPad should have a charging cable that would allow for easy removal of the unit for the hot Arizona days.

That said, I feel like you have achieved 99% of those points. I like the style and approach you took to it all and for that, I give mad props sir. Now come the questions:
1) in terms of fabrication, how much experience would it require to create a mount like yours, assuming one knows how to solder and has enough electrical experience to wire everything?
2) How stable is it when in the mount? More specifically, when Riding in a bumpy road, does it rattle or lose connection to either of the ports?
3) Understanding the project isn't finished, what do you estimate the total price of the project is, including mounts, fiberglass, etc?

Lastly, I want to reiterate how amazing of a project yours is and that I cannot simply wait until the finished version is posted. I would suggest some video footage along with steps by step pictures

Hey sorry if response is a little late, got busy with school and other project but will have almost entire august to myself and will definitely finish whats been started. Ill answer your questions as follows:

1) Just as a heads up i do electronic repairs for living so every step was planned out before i started, but without experience you might end up spending more time figuring things out. But as of fabrication you would have to have to have basic soldering skills, you dont actually have to solder anything to the iPad itself only the wires, even cheap 10$ solder from radio shack will do. And you will have to have basic understanding how ipad hardware works, and how everything is connected in it.

2) Ive had it mounted for over a month now, and been driving my car daily, and driving to ny from buffalo almost every weekend, and so far so good. There is no rattle and nothing got disconnected, because all the insides are reinforced with zipties, really good quality adhesives, and the structure of the mount itself makes every part go where it supposed to. Only modification that i have done was that i built a box from plexiglass around motherboard and installed small fan from macbook, i just had one laying around but any laptop fan will work just fine, and i powered it directly from the power outlet from under the glovebox, but honestly i feel like if you have tints and ac running you dont need to do this. iPad prevents itself from overheating.

3) Total actually comes out really cheap. Only thing, you might end up buying few thing online because local stores dont carry them, but as i already mentioned I had most things needed before i started. But here is the brake down of prices.
1. iPad itself- whichever model you buy I would highly suggest buying it from walmart with accidental damage warranty which is 30$ extra in case something goes wrong you can always get a brand new one to work with. Even though I already had one, still bought another one just for the car.
2. Tools, you would need dremel with extra bits (50$), solder and soldering stuff~ 15$.
3. adhesive you can buy some at you phone repair shop ~5$, zipties~ 2$, lightning cable ( only buy a real one only from apple) 30$, if you want to glue glass to the lcd so picture is brighter on sunny days you would need LOCA and UV gel nail polish curing booth together is 60$, This part is actually where you need experience because you are running a risk of messing up the LCD screen.
Laptop fan 5$, wires and controller for the fan another 5$, flex extensions for cameras 20$
4. The surface frame that goes around the iPad ive made one myself the one on the pictures above costed me 10$ in material, but ive contacted a shop that can make me a nice looking one out of fiberglass and painted to match interior on wrapped in any material 275$. This is the part where if you have experience in fabrication you will save a lot. For the actual frame that holds the ipad i used stock cubby compartment and cut it with dremel here and there to fit everything in perfectly.
So assuming that you have ipad and tools everything will run under 100$, and depends on the surface frame how you want to make it look and who makes it price will vary. Honestly the sufrace frame is strictly for the looks it has no function at all and can easily be clipped on and off, you can even end up making few different once
