New Install AVH 4500

1 Attachment(s)
I am week old owner of a 2013 370Z. I must say the site is very informative and aided me greatly installing the AVH Pioneer. Sorry about the glare on the screen... facing the sun... no tint yet.

kenchan 01-17-2013 09:55 PM

looks good, congrats. been a fan of pioneer since trying one back in 2009 in my Z. i have the 3100 and 4100 in my G35C.

did you use the remote module? metra one or pac/perpheral?

im wondering if the pac i have in the car for the 3100 will work with the 4500Bt or the 5500BH.

RonRizz 01-18-2013 06:55 AM

you can check on the PAC website...

I used the metra, have not got all the buttons working yet. GOing to manually program it tomorrow. I did some reading, you will have to update the pac for the new pioneer models.

hey thanks for the reply

yah, i suppose if i want the BT to work off the steering wheel i would need the latest revision, but i think i can wing the major features with the same pac i have. (might be wrong), but worth a try.

Just put the exact head unit in wife's Z yesterday. Infinity 6.5 separates, JL 10 W1, and Pioneer's new GM-D8604 for power. Sounds great! I can put pics tomorrow or Monday. AVH-X4500BT because I have HD radio in my new car and HD radio is pointless where we live. So I saved the $50 bucks from the 5500 BT. My wife isn't going to pay for radio either. Sirrius got a big thumbs down. NAV, REALLY? DEC 2011 got the Z. Haven't cracked 12k miles. She doesn't go anywhere to need the NAV.

I have the AVH 8400 in my Titan. Besides the detachable face on the 8400, I like the 4500 better because it is more Android friendly with Pandora. In my Z I'm running pioneer 6.5 component set, Zenclosure with a JL 10 W3 being pushed by an "old school" Punch 200. I agree with the NAV and the Sirrius. Got 32gig iTouch in the glove box.:happydance:

Garrett63 02-17-2013 11:53 AM

Curious as to which double din kit this is. I'm planning to put in the AVH-X5500($379 on amazon $500 crutchfield) in a week or so, as soon as that damn tax return gets here.

Is that the metra or scosche?

homelessgdog 02-17-2013 10:32 PM

YUP. Android. Galaxy 3 wife. HTC me. I don't drive the Z to often but it rocks now that stereo is up to snuff. Very happy with X4500BT. Like I said Pioneer amp rocks too GM-D8604. I'll take some pics tomorrow. Steering wheel functions are working great and the installer added a toggle switch if you want to watch DVD while driving (for passenger of course!)

I used the Parking Brake Over-ride Bypass off Amazon.com for 19 bucks. Very easy to install. 3 wires and you're done.

What box are you using? Here are a couple of pics of the 10 in Zenclosure.

homelessgdog 02-18-2013 10:48 AM

Just had sub mounted in a box and thrown in the back trunk. It was pulling teeth to get wife to okay adding stereo. She won't spend (or let me spend) money not needed for a cool sub box. She keeps a car cover in the truck for her office. The cover lays on top of the sub box. You can't even see it. I tried to post pics but I got file too big. I tried to add them as attachs but maybe there is another way???

kenchan 03-11-2013 11:39 AM

just an update. i installed a new avh4500bt over the weekend to replace my avh3100dvd.

all harnesses were compatible. and since my steering wheel has no BT button, i didn't need to reprogram the PAC or get a new version or anything.

i routed the BT phone mic cable to the ceiling near the rearview camera, and the USB cord into my center console. everything works great with my Droid4. all steering controls work too. :)

cheshirecat 03-11-2013 02:54 PM

I was really happy with my 8400bt. Had to manually program the AWSC for my touring model Bose stuff, but it worked out great. I put the mic in the same place you did. The cheap Nissan Livina cameras from ebay mate up great with this unit.

fuct 03-11-2013 02:59 PM

DAMN... i have a pioneer 4200dvd and it wont work with my galaxy s3 :\ nor does the screen operate properly in cold weather with the windows cracked or rolled down.

Cbtech 03-11-2013 03:54 PM

wow i spent all of Saturday night doing research on decks and actually decided on this set since it works with Android more regularly than others. This post has convinced me that this is the one i want to get. if i didnt hate Apple so much (dont like the way they do business :shakes head:) i would get an Itouch to go along with it for music since album art is one thing that i really like that doesn't work with Android  Does anyone know if you connect to a USB if it will show album art from a thumb drive?

kenchan 03-11-2013 04:01 PM

yes it does. if you ripped your own CD's you may need to manually put the thumb picts in your usb drive's folder for that album.

yah, the 4500BT's LCD is very sharp too compared to the earlier model 7". i have a 4100 in my G.

UruZai 03-11-2013 05:12 PM

So after doing countless hours of research for what double din I wanted to buy, I am deciding to go with the avh4500 as well. I am a total noob when it comes to audio things. So I have some questions for you guys.
1. How difficult is the installtion? Is there anything I should be aware of when installing?
2. I noticed that crutchfield sells it with the harnesses and dash kit. Would it be better to buy from crutchfield or buy everything seperately (since I have read that the dash kit they give you doesn't sit right with the ac controls)?

Thanks in advance!

your better off going with Amazon $322 since crutchfield wants $450. Then buying Metra Dash Kit saving you almost $100 for the total install.

looking at numerous how to's on this forum it looks very straight forward with a 3 out of 10 difficulty.

speedracer007 03-11-2013 07:11 PM

Need help on getting the Album Art to show up from a USB drive. I have all my CDs ripped (using the Windows Media Manager) and I can see the Album Art in the folders. I did a straight copy/paste onto a flash drive. Album Art does not show up on the Headunit. When I copy the same files onto my Sandisk player, the Art does show up, so I assumed it was a limitation of the flash drive

I have downloaded the MediaMonkey software -- is there something I can do with it to fix the problem?

Okay thanks! Do I still need to buy the wiring harness and antenna adapter in order for it to work?

Wiring Harness

and yes.

speedracer007 03-12-2013 08:11 AM

Antenna Adaptor (splice the blue wire into the blue/white wire on the Pioneer harness or you will not get good reception) :

Amazon.com: Metra 40-NI12 Nissan 07-Up Antenna Adapter: Car Electronics

If you want to keep the steering wheel controls (you have to splice this into the VEHICLES side of the harness and then plug the 3.5 mm jack into the "wired remote input" of the Pioneer. Most people (myself included) need to do the manual programming to get it to work, but that is easy):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Parking Brake Bypass (even if you will never watch a movie, get it to keep full functionality of the phone features while driving):

http://www.amazon.com/AVH-X1500DVD-A...bypass+pioneer

I would suggest going into the MediaMonkey preferences, then going to "Tags and Playlists" and under the "Artwork" option choose "Save image to Tag if possible otherwise save to folder".

This will usually fix the issue. Make sure you blow out the drive and resync all the music through MM.

+1

try to use anything else but Windows media player to rip your music. media monkey has the option for that and what bit rate to rip at. since thumb drives are so cheap now for the amount of space, I rip all my music at 320 bit rate.

speedracer007 03-12-2013 02:16 PM

Thanks -- I just downloaded Mediamonkey last night so I will play around with it tonight and set up my preferences. Then I will use it in the future for ripping.

I saw this article on how to use Mediamonkey to fix what I have already ripped. Going to give this a try so hopefully I dont have to rip my entire collection again.

Alpha Geek: Whip your MP3 library into shape, Part II - Album art

speedracer007 03-13-2013 08:41 AM

MediaMonkey did the trick. I will rip all future CDs with it and have made sure the preferences are set to add the album art to the individual tracks.

I was also able to follow these instructions to add the artwork to my existing music:

Alpha Geek: Whip your MP3 library into shape, Part II - Album art

I started at the "A"s and have worked my way back to the "I"s. Should be finished tonight. Nice to see the Album Art and not the "big gray musical note" on screen.

kenchan 03-13-2013 10:51 AM

^^

if anyone's on a mac, you can download Tagr (free download) to add your tags including album art.

kenchan 03-13-2013 11:34 AM

for today i need to figure out what this DB (data base) button is doing and how to register the Favorite page.

i turned off the BT music stream and Pandora unless plugged in cause i didnt want to drain my phone's battery while in my pocket.

speedracer007 03-13-2013 11:54 AM

Check out Pioneer's webpage:

DVD Receivers | Pioneer Electronics USA

Lots of videos on there on the different features. For some reason, they have alot of them attached to the AVH-X2500BT page, but for the most part they are general information that applies to all the units.

Here is the AVH-X2500BT video page:
AVH-X2500BT - <b>NEW!</b> - 2-DIN Multimedia DVD Receiver with 6.1" WVGA Touchscreen Display, MIXTRAX, Bluetooth®, and AppRadio Mode for iPhone® | Pioneer Electronics USA

See the "Playback USB Content" video about the DB button

You should keep your phone out of your pockets most anytime your sitting some where like the office or your car. The phone works hard having to transmit through your body (which is dense) which in turn uses more power. (Remember the dreaded Iphone 4 with its antennae issue if you held it a certain way it would lose almost all bars)

When a cell phone is on its in constant contact with your providers network. The average cell phone will ping the closest tower every 15-25 seconds. You will sometimes notice this delay when you call someones cell right next to you and it will ring on your end but not on theirs for several seconds. That is because their network is first trying to locate the phone where it last saw it and waiting for the response. Because its doing all that work all the time you will sometimes feel your phone getting hot while its deep in your pocket. If your streaming Bluetooth at the same time you're going to kill your battery.

Also if you keep your phone in your pocket it might cause it to roam which will use even more power since its not looking for its native network and must communicate more with the alien network as well as continue to search for towers in its own network.

So the moral of the story is take the phone out and put in the cup holder or somewhere out in the open away from your body and you will not see a terrible loss in battery while streaming.

kenchan 03-13-2013 03:56 PM

thanks for the tip...but in a car, i dont know when i might get into an accident where the phone might fly out of the cup holder somewhere where i wont be able to reach.

so this is why i prefer to have it in my pocket. :)

now if my pants flew off in an accident, then oh well... :icon14: im on my own....

Hey kenchan

Since you have a Pioneer unit like mine I have a question.

On the drive home was I was running the WAZE app on my phone. I noticed if I had Pandora running, or selected Bluetooth Audio on the Pioneer unit, the WAZE instructions would come out of the car stereo speakers.

However, when I had the Radio or USB selected, the WAZE would not cut into the music and come out over the car stereo speakers.:shakes head:

Is that a limitation of the unit, or do I have some setting wrong?

I need to do a test tonight with making a phone call to my cell phone while I have the different functions up and running on the Pioneer to see what is happening.

Hopefully everyone has steered you away from Crutchfield. (however they do have an awesome support team) I got the same deck from Amazon $100 cheaper. As far as the dash kit, I used the OEM one. Check out the pics on page one of this post. I did not have to modify it and it sits flush without any gaps. Plus you don't have to worry about the AC control issue. Installation was rather easy.
