box behind the seat for a sub. has anyone tried?
i have an alpine 500w and im looking for a sub to go behind the seat on one side. not interested in bone shattering bass, i listen to rock and the factory (non bose) has no low end at all. i found a couple of boxes that fit, which are pre loaded with different subs, but im hoping someone has input as to how this will sound. i refuse to mount a sub anywhere that it can be seen from outside the car. any responses are appreciated, thanks!

Behind the seat at the bottom is pretty much out of the question there is simply not enough space down there.
If you are talking about the two shelf's behind the seats they will work fine however you will be able to see them if you look in the car. Kicker, Rockford, and polk all make great bang for the buck subs. I recommend a single 8 or 10. |
there is a JL audio 8" for like 300 in the box. supposedly a mid level sub they told me. sounds great in the store but who knows. the box fit the shelf. my windows are dark and i fugured it would be harder to see one there as opposed to the hatch. cant remember the speaker model #

CSA, where can i get that kind of box for 50$? im having trouble finding anything close to the size i need, and they want way too much to build one.
|
thanks for the input all of you
|
gonna be an awful tight fit back there, even for the cv10. (.8 cuft) min. sealed box, and over 4" mount depth. you would be better served with a shallow mount sub, and a box volume as small as possible.

well that JL 8" fit. we tried it. it was perfect. but its like 300$. other than that yea i considered that but like i was saying, to get a box around here is nearly impossible unless i pay a lot to have one made. there is a crappy old sony xplode in a box at best buy that stretches the limitations of "fitting", but i only measured in the store and havent tried it. plus i have a feeling that the sony will suck, even though it supposedly can easily take the power. just looks cheap. at 130$ in the box, my expectations are low.

go to sonicelectronics and look at the pioneer ts-swx251.
should fit right in, and only $100. some good reviews on it as well. if that doesnt do it for you, hell, I'll build you a box for a shallow mount of your choice, you just pay the shipping. i |
ok, thanks ron ill look into that. you deal much with sonic electronics? i read mixed opinions on this forum about them
|
purchased from them many, many times for customers. never had any issues.
|
we do know that sub-bass frequencies are non-directional, right? if you can tell where the sub is in your car, you have tuning issues. crossover too high, out of phase, ect. one sub or two, any spot in the car, makes no difference. |
cool, glad you said that. i had heard of components being out of whack in that sense, but thats the first time i hear of a sub with the issue. i've put them in random unbalanced places before, but i really don't have a "tuned" ear to notice any unbalance.

I have bought small sealed boxes from a local brick and mortar for $40. If they are wanting any more than that for that small of a box I would go somewhere else. You cant go wrong with a Kicker sub especially for the price. I would have one over Pioneer any day of the week and only an excelon series Kenwood. This is just personal opinion of course. Sonic Electronix is good I ordered my T1 from them and it was positive all the way around. |
UPDATE:
got the amp installed, bought a JL W3v3 8" subwoofer. still breaking in the sub, so i have the amp gain set low. so far i am amazed. this sub is perfect. sounds crystal clear and hits incredible lows. im not into extreme bass, so i just wanted some low end kick to make the factory radio less annoying. and i was only hoping to be able to cruise at highway speeds with the windows down and still get the full range of sound from the radio. this set up exceeded my expectations! |
glad to hear it.

Zenlclosure subwoofer box Alpine 10' Type R and Rockford 500 amp FTW!!!!
|
i bet that 10" is intense, knowing what just this little 8" booger can do!
|
It hits hard enough to make your eyes bounce!!!
|
man i heard somewhere the other day that subbin hard all the time can blind someone. that would be some serious bragging rights ey?

I just went the same route except I went with the JL CP106LG-W3v3. It's just enough for me.

But, as with everything else about audio, it's what sounds good to you. To the forum in general, it's usually very easy to phase bass drivers. Just do an A-B comparison by swapping the wires to one of the drivers. When out of phase, there will be a very noticeable "muddy", muted sound. This works best if you can set the drivers side-by-side and stand directly in front of (or behind if there are no enclosures) them. |
more precisely, cancellation issues, not standing waves. highly unlikely to create standing waves at sub frequencies. the wavelengths ar far too long.
1126 fps speed of sound 60hz tone= 18.76 ft wave. higher freq. is where you may run into issues with standing waves as well as Inside your sub box. for a standing wave you need to have 2 paralell surfaces reflecting that wave at each other. |

Does anyone know if the CP108LG-W3v3 will fit behind the drivers seat? It looks like the length is really close with the contours of that space.
|
should fit right in.

I went with the little 10" Pioneer and it has plenty of kick for a car this small inside. I just put it in the back because I don't use the hatch anyways and it fit right under the cargo cover.

I like that space behind the seats for an Amp-Rack, but I dunno about a sub, it just seems like its only vibrating the back of your seat and is baffling the sound waves... :ugh2:
For instance, I have 2 Kicker S10L7's in my trunk in a Zenclosures Upfire box between the rear bar and strut domes. It was more of I had 2 subs from my previous vehicle, might as well use both instead of 1 and a paperweight more than the car Needing that much bass. As for the hating on Kicker, not sure why, these things sound amazing and I've never really even turned them up. (Not that there is much need to in this tiny space) :icon17: Right now the limiting factor is the stock fronts. I plan on upgrading them to a kicker component set, but my problem right now is I do plan on "one day" gutting the interior and removing everything unessential to make it full up race car. However I have no idea when that "one day" will be. So to get them and go through the trouble of installing them right now, and enjoying them until that day, or not bothering since eventually they'll be removed. If anyone knows of someone looking to sell a Single 10" Square hole upfire Zenclosures box, I would be really interested in that sale/trade. |

If i was to install one of these in the trunk, what would be the best way to secure it? Cheers |

Forgive me for not understanding the details of car audio, but do you also have to have a amplifier installed in the car somewhere to drive the sub, or is there a sub output on the back of the stock Nav/Audio unit? Thanks. |
Hi Guys,
After a bid of advice. What would be the best place to install a CP108LG-W3v3 and the best way to secure it? Cheers |
