I called a dealer and they are available for purchase but I was told it looks like there are two different types of mounting plates for the touring which made no sense to me.

You could also just make brackets out of MDF material as well.

Just curious why 6X9's in the front?

I have a pair from another car sitting in a closet. They would have to be better than the stock speakers.

I guess it depends on how thick the spacer/adaptor is but what is the max mounting depth on the 6x9s? I heard that it was pretty shallow and that aftermarket 6x9 were hard to find to fit because of the shallow mounting depth. Is this true?

Yes it's very shallow. I actually had some 5x7's laying around from a 240sx i used to have and they fit perfect.

Late on this but yes the mounts for the 6x9's from bose are very shallow you would need a spacer. But I would highly recommend going with 6.5's as your going to get the same if not better quality from them. Especially component speakers. Plus there is a bigger selection of 6.5's that will fit.

I actually do have a component set. I have the Polk Audio db6501 and it doesnt sound bad. But i was looking to add a little better sounding bass at louder volumes. I want to stay away from adding a sub if i can so i figured 6x9's would be the next best thing? Maybe not? Oh and i still have the stock non bose headunit and no aftermarket amp amp.

If your looking for bass, look towards better 6.5's such as the focal polyglass or hertz Hi-energy, or mile, these will make it sound like you have a sub in your car! Also if your not running an aftermarket head unit check into running one this will increase your quality a lot. Hopefully some of my customers can chime in on this.
