Where to begin.... The search button may be a good start.

Anyway -

Budget?
What type of music do you listen to?
Planning on running front speakers, rears and/or subs (or a combination of any or all of these)?
Are you looking for a purely loud system (SPL) or more quality (SQ)?

The list goes on....

Well, I've been doing the same research. Here is my two cents for what I see the industry doing. I think that the car stereo world is going to head toward the applications phase. The $ will be spent on the quality of the internal parts but most of the features will be applications that you can download to a smart phone. I've looking at systems that are double din and allow for interaction between my phone and the stereo. Pioneer makes some good ones for less than around $600. As an IT guy, I'm seeing the industry turn in this direction. This way the vendors can continue to develop custom applications that their customers can download; there-by making more $. But I think its a great idea.

The speakers help in the sound quality. Smart phone sound bad in IMHO.

Depends on the smart phone and how you have it connected to the HU. Bluetooth audio and headphone out can be seriously hit or miss as far as I'm concerned, but if you have a HU with the ability to read the phone as a mass storage device the phone is no longer a factor in sound quality.

An BT audio is going to be more compressed than using a CD, ipod, or thumb drive. That being said, I do like the connivance of having BT audio. I am about to install a head unit with it in my jobs new work van.

Yes I am that obsessed.
