Default do I need component speakers if I just want a "decent" system?

I really just want a system that can play music at a decent volume without sounding distorted and shitty like the base. That's it. I don't want anything fancy or top of the line. Maybe a little bit of bass would be nice but I don't want it badly enough to pay for a sub and amp and install and all that.

Is it possible to have this with some good quality coaxial speakers and a new head unit? Or will coaxial speakers always sound crappy?

A quality set of coaxials can sound very good, and anything will sound better than your stock setup..... However.... a good set of coax can cost you as much as a decent set of components, and given the choice I would get the components. My humble opinion.

Is that including the sub though? With the components I know I will need to buy a sub and sub box and amp and pay for wiring and all that stuff...which is the main reason why I don't want to get components

I've never heard a set of coax speakers I've liked. A good quality pair would be better than the base but I'd spend the extra $50 or so for a low end set of components. These Polks are pretty nice for $107.

You don't need a sub with components. A decent set is going to produce more bass than the stock speakers.

ok, thanks w0rM. I will take your word for it and go with those Polk speakers you linked. While you're at it...do you mind recommending a good head unit?

Are there any good touch screen head units with bluetooth and an auxiliary jack that I can get for under $500?

So just a new set of speakers will make the base HU sound better-? Another member has his Bose speakers for sale...

I'm a huge fan of the Pioneer head units. I just picked this one (AVH-P4400BH) up a couple of months ago and I couldn't be happier. It has a 7" screen, bluetooth and support for Pandora. You can even charge your phone with the supplied USB lead.

It certainly can but the Bose isn't much of an upgrade from stock. To run the sub that comes with it, you'd need at least a small amp too. Aftermarket speakers will give you a lot more bang for your buck.

Not the whole truth. Your components are going to play the same frequencies your coax will play.
The main difference besides the obvious (that they are seperated) is in the crossover it sends only specific frequencies to each driver, where in a coax the woofer gets full range, and the tweeter merely has a filter on it to cut out lower frequencies. this causes alot of overlap in the upper ranges.
both setups will play the full range of frequencies, components just do it better, and smarter.
A subwoofer adds richness to the sound, and both setups will benefit by adding one.
Lastly, I can tell you that if you do not intend to add a subwoofer, I would not buy those polks. although they sound good, they will not deliver in the lower frequencies. I have owned both the db and the mm series sets.

Yeah, dump all the Bose stuff. Check the DIYMA forum if you're looking to get good components for less $$$. You can buy an excellent sounding component set from partsexpress (you just need to know which mid, tweet and crossovers to buy). I'm partial to Alpine head units myself. Get one with at least a 4volt output as well. If you can swing it put sound deadening material inside the doors to further enhance the sound.

I hated the stock speakers. Bought a double din pioneer that puts out good watts and bought $75 kenwood coaxle speakers-- Sounds 10x better
