Default Backup Camera with dedicated monitor question

Hi, I have a 40th edition with a Bose system that I am quite happy with. I was looking to add a back up camera, but I feel I have so many options, such as hiding the monitor in the cubby or removing the cubby lid all together.

So here's my question, Does a backup camera system with a 5 or 7 inch monitor exist that while not in reverse has a customized screen saver so it's not so ugly to look at when its not in use? I kind of understand that the normal set up is it wont have power going to it unless it is in reverse.

I'm just dreaming here i suppose..

Well, after looking at the "What to know about Bose" sticky for the twentieth time, I noticed that is said:

What are my options for upgrading from bose?
This is where it can get interesting. You can add new audio to your bose system but you have to do some things in order to do so.
If you have the regular non nav bose system you can upgrade the head unit and use this dash kit and adapter to run it with the rest of the bose system still in tack.

So, if I'm understanding this right.. since I have the non-nav bose, I can still get a new head unit that has nav, backup camera, and all the bells and whistles without losing anything bose and while doing so, keeping my pretty red stitched cubby lid in place?

I know this subject is played out with most of you who know all this stuff and I apologize in advance.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is a bit more than you are looking for, but it has what you asked for plus other info. You can view the back up camera on the fly too as well as automatically when in reverse. I have one on my Avalanche and it functions great and I can monitor tranny temp oil temp or pressure and so much more just by pluggin in to the OBDII port.

Yes you are correct you can add a new head unit and keep the bose (non nav) system.

As for a good camera and sensor in one check out alpines new sensor system.

Alpine VPX-B104R VPASS Visual Parking Assist Sensor System at Crutchfield.com

However I think with a good quality camera with guidance lines you should be safe.

if you're one that doesn't like the aftermarket look, how about the LCD embedded in your rearview mirror? i would do that if that's the approach.

I think it is a waste of money. I only did it because I was bored and it was only <$50 for everything

Only thing im concerned about in replacing the head unit is, will the steering wheel controls be made to still work as designed? last thing i need is a remote for most standard functions.

When the bose head unit goes, does the 6 cd option(like anyone listens to cd's anymore) go away as well? I'm not familiar with whats behind the pretty face of a head unit.

You will be able to use all buttons as usual except the phone buttons, they need a little extra work to get them to work.

This is probably one of if not the best add on back-up cameras available. Alpine Electronics of America, Inc.
I am running this one with my KEnwood HU and I also have the Nissan in rear-view mirror monitor and back-up camera too. I have videos of both in my journal. The Alpine gives you 4 selectable views with its camera and also audio and visual warnings when objects are behind your car in blind spots. It works great.
