satellite radio
Hey guys,
I currently have the Pioneer Avic130bt and I would like to add satellite radio, here are my questions: Does it need a separate antenna? If so where in the car do you install it? Also where is the cheapest place to buy the module? or does a forum vendor carries them? Thanks. |

Yes I have the same radio and it needs an antenna. You can buy the whole kit from various vendors. I used crutchfield. I placed the antenna on the same small metal plate with the gps antenna. The plate is on the dash on the passenger side.

The SATs do need a separate antenna. XM versus Sirius also have separate units. The antenna can be placed inside the car on the passenger side of the dash. Works fine in-spite of conventional wisdom that states it must be placed on an outside metal surface plane to increase reception.

+1...... With any radio to my knowledge, you will have to buy the antenna. I had to with my Kenwood DNX9990HD radio.

The small metal plate acts as a ground plane, but its small and I do get drop-outs of the satellite signal when driving under trees. The XM antenna would function better with a larger ground plane. So yes, being mounted on the outside of the car on the roof you will get better reception.

He is talking about the second antenna for a Sirius receiver.
