Stock backup cam with aftermarket radio?
Hey all, may be buying my Z tomorrow. It comes with a rearview cam as they dont have any in my combo without. Anyways if I got something like the Kenwood nav unit, can I tap into the stock rearview cam? Would it display on both the Kenwood and the rearview mirror? Or would I need to add a 2nd (new) camera to make it work?
Thanks |

I wondered the same thing as well & I wouldn't see why they couldn't tap into the stock rearview cam.

It may be possible, as long as the harness coming from the rear camera is separate from the rest of the harnesses, and 2 there is a standard 2 wire input feed it is providing that you would wire into a rca male connector.
However if you are getting the rear camera that means you have the bose with nav? And if you have the bose with nav you can not change the head unit. Unless they are now offering the reverse camera as a separate screen.

Ok, sense it is new if you can get a diagram for that harness of the camera I can let you know if it is possible, and what you would need to do.

In the end I dont mind having the video show on either
A. Both mirror and HU B. just the HU I would just rather tap into the existing factory camera if possible to save me money and the hassle of running the stuff to the trunk, etc. Has anyone on the boards by chance done this? |

You can no doubt catch the signal wires at the mirror....however you may have to power the camera as well if you disconnect it from th e mirror because often times factory cameras get power from the mirrors they are connected to.

What I can tell you for sure is that there have been people that buy aftermarket cameras and the OEM rear view mirror and they work together. It would be safe to say that it would work oppositely because of this.

I am trying to do this too. I have a stock reverse cam (no mirror monitor). I have an aftermarket radio which will take the composite rca input for camera. This is a 2-wire connection (no brainer). I need to locate the actual harness coming from the camera up to the front of the car. Has this been found? I plan on adding a tft mirror later and my stereo will allow for the camera to be displayed on the screen as well as external mirror monitor.
I would venture to say that for an aftermarket stereo the reverse power signal should work for the positive power on the camera (turns on when in reverse only) OR.... the revers light power would also work. Ground is ground. The other two wires will be the video signal and video signal from a cmos camera is pretty universal. All I would need to do is splice a RCA connector on it and plug it in. ~J~ |

@chknhawk
You can most easily tap into the camera at the rear hatch. The wire comes through the rear on the passenger side. If you pull out the spare & other misc junk it's easy to get to. I don't have color codes handy, but it should be easy enough to trace. |

Yeah... i played with it a little then i had to fly to Germany. I will check it out when i get back for sure. I tried one wire as power and everything else as video with no results. I will swap the power wire. From what i have been reading those cmos cameras are pretty tough and can take some abuse so if you hook them ip.completely wrong you dont really risk messing them up. I hope that is true. You do have to trace and figure it all out though. I think i actually uploaded some pics. I tapped it right at the harness closest to the camera. Thanks.
