New Car Stereo Set-up
I have finally finished upgrading all my factory components. I went with the following....
Head Unit: Kenwood DNX9990HD Speakers: Hertz Hi-Energy System HSK 165XL (2 way system) SW: 2 JL Audio 6W3 Amp: JL Audio HD Series HD600/4 The Hertz speakers I didn't take pics of since they are in the door (6 1/2's) & the dashboard (1 1/8's) Last edited by MacLean; 05-14-2012 at 05:57 PM. |

They were custom made boxes. You will not have any problems with this kind of box made for a 6'' subwoofer. I can have the driver/passenger seat slide all the way back & tilted all the way back w/o any problems. I wanted a subwoofer that can produce a good punch, but not have to advertise that I have speakers in the trunk. The two 6W3's & both boxes were $606 out the door at Houston Car Stereo.
To me having two 8'', 10'', or two 12'' would draw too much attention & would cause some rattling noise. I have been there & done that with two Rockford Fosgate DVC 15's about 15 yrs ago with a 1k watt mono amp. I have a sports car & what to keep things real on my end. If I wanted to rattle things, then I would have gotten a Escalade. |

The two 6's sound really good & JL Audio speakers hit hard. For the size of the speakers & the size of the boxes, I'm not going to throw rocks at them. The two 6's have more bass than one 8'', but less than one 10''. So two 6's are b/w one 8'' & one 10'' for bass. The JL Audio 6W3 produces more bass than the Kicker 6'' which I was looking at as well. The Kicker 6'' doesn't have as big of a magnet as the JL Audio 6W3. I would highly recommend the JL Audio 6W3's to anyone who doesn't want everybody & there mother to know, or see that they have subwoofers. The amp that I have (JL Audio HD600/4) is pushing 150 watts x 4 @ 4 ohms & is RMS to all my speakers which is very good. OH FYI....... I do not have any rear speakers....excluding the sub's.

I'm mid way through installing the same Hertz Speakers and the Kenwood 9990. How do you like them?
The 2 6" JLs are an interesting idea, I picked up the 13.5" spare tire box used on the forum. I also drove around without my Bose sub plugged in, I agree with Stewie, I didn't even miss it. I'm worried the 13.5 will be too much. |

The entire set-up is awesome. The Hertz speakers are great, but I do recommend playing around with the EQ (DO NOT LEAVE EQ ON FLAT). I have the speaker Dynamat for the 6 1/2 in the door. Thnxs.......the 2 6'' are nicely hidden & still produce a very good punch, but depends on how much punch (bass) you want. As stated before both 6'' are b/w one 8'' & one 10''. WOW....... the 13.5'' is effen heavy & a huge effen woofer. You will need a very good 500 watt amp for it. I hope you do not have your car lowered b/c I will guarantee you that if you put the 13.5'' with box (obviously) that your car will drop. The 13.5" was meant to go into a truck, suv, or a sedan & not really a sports car. I have not heard the Bose stereo in the Z, so I would not know how it sounds with & w/o the SW. I can say this I bet the Bose speakers sounds a lot better than the base speakers (factory speakers) that come in the base Z & in the Nismo. The 13.5'' might be too much, but I would Dynamat the hell out of the car especially the trunk for sure. Oh FYI....... You can still put two 8'' where the two 6'' are at. This is the passenger seat all the way back & the incline all the way back as well. The driver seat would be the same if you choose so. Once again behind each seat in the box is a 6'' JL Audio (6W3).

I really like that set up. I just installed a Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS, but I had to get a dealer install my steering wheel controls. The dealer told me that he has built boxes to fill the compartment behind the trayed area behind the seats. I thought that would be a good option with sacrificing much space since I do not use them.
