Installed avic-940BT, backup camera wiring question.
First of all, big thanks to bigaudiofanet. I sent him all the harnesses and he solder and wrap all the connections. He also connectd the steering wheel control and did the by-pass so everything is plug and play for me. Big, the bypass worked, I already tested it out!
I have never done a radio install or any electrical work on the car, I manage to get everything installed and working. Took me 4 hours in the cold. The only thing left for me is the backup camera. I need to figure out an easy way to tap into the reverse light. This is probably a dumb question, but what kind of wire tap splice should I buy? What guage are the wiring in the car? 22? I found 2 tan wires, one at the center of the trunk after removing the center trim piece, and the other is on the left rear light that lead directly to the light connector. I read all the posts about where to tap, it seems like either one of this will be fine? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I am totally new to any electrical work at all. Any help is appreciated. I felt so accomplished getting the radio installed. |

You may need either a test light or a volt meter. You want to probe both those tan/orange wires. Whichever one gets power while your in reverse is the one you need. You can get away with a T tap however I like to splice back the insulation wrap the new wire, solder it and than wrap it.

Would something like this work? Just don't have the skill to solder and splice the wire.

i would certainly avoid the test light when working on newer cars due to there low internal resistance they have a tendency to pass ground to whatever wire you are testing. And just a heads up you can also find in the drivers kick panel its IIRC the only orange wire in that harness

Got the splice tap connector, for the reverse lead from the radio. It is probably not perfect but it worked. The orange wire leading to the left tail light is where I tap. It is the only tan/orange wire in there.
Ran into a different problem, The power wire from the camera is so small, that the splice connector couldn't cut through the insulation, I ended up splice the wire and used a lot of electrical tape. When I get more time I would open it up and get one of those posi lock connector to make it more secure. For now I think it is good enough and everything works perfectly. Thanks for all The advice. This is so much better than the stock base radio. Last edited by ryang; 04-29-2012 at 03:22 PM. |

yah, i had a problem with my camera's power wire too twice using taps cause the jacket was thick, yet the condutor was small. ended up just soldering the damn wire. hahaha.

And people wonder why I do not like them. They sometimes work but I just like solder so much more solid
