Changing tweet location
I was just getting ready to buy Dynaudio (MW 650, Md 102, and xovers) components because I've been disatisfied with the sq on my existing tweeters. I recently came to the conclusion that its not the equipment but that the tweet locations on the z are just about impossible. They are so close to the glass that just about everything will sound too bright. Ya, I've tried eq-ing the edginess out but all that does is suck the life out of the front stage.
I'm thinking of relocating the tweets down next to the mids. Has anybody done this and what were the results?? I'm currently running JL C5 (silk tweets) components which replaced RF T2 components (alum. tweets), all in the last 90 days. I spoke to Wicked CAS to make some custom pods but they didn't seem interested (I didn't speak to Nazur, only to one of his coven.) Their lack of enthusiasm was very surprising ... I may still buy the Dynaudio but I think just about any speaker set will sound better with tweets closer to the mids in the Z so I'll use the JL's to test my hypothesis and then upgrade to the Dynaudio. What do y'all think? Bill |

Heres what I did with mine
having an issue posting my pic, but I put my tweets in the upper corner of the grill above the mid, angled upward, and toward the center. Most recommend that your tweeter stay close to your mid for best sound quality (although some would argue on placement to be much higher) If you are running a processor, time alignment cures alot of ills.
These sounded perfectly fine for all intents and purposes, but I recently added a set of tweets in the factory locations passed at 8000hz, to raise the stage slightly, without drawing your attention to them. (I did this strictly for competition purposes)

I am up for some custom pods.
Yes location is key for most tweeters, matter of fact one of my current customers systems is still to bright after hours of tuning in the factory location. I am thinking a relocation is going to be happening soon. Anything that is reflected off glass is going to come back much brighter because it has more area to reflect off of.

I remember seeing pics of that install, it was a 370. Aside from the impracticality of losing the vents (for those of us in colder winter climates) I thought it looked great.

try mounting them on the A-Pillars, It will take the harshness away.
What I recomment is use double sided tape to hold them in place first and give it a listen before you modify your A-Pillars.

Thanks for the replies--
RonRizz --Very interested in seeing a picture if you can manage one. (It must be a very tight fit.) How do you wire the second tweeter? Are you running the same manufacturer tweeter as in the door? I assume you're attenuating the dash tweeter, yes? If so, how? Any additional details would be great. Wicked --Do not have the slightest interest in modifying the A pillar. Bill |
