MDF spare encl- woofer upgrade
Yesterday I replaced the Pioneer shallow mount (SW-251) with an Alpine SWR-T10 in my MDF ring/spare tire enclosure.
I simply cannot believe the difference! I know almost all of us who went the MDF ring way initially used the Pioneer so I thought you might be interested in what a difference the upgrade made. Be aware that the Alpine is an eighth inch deeper than the Pioneer. The Alpine can be had for $250 from Sonic Electronix. Well worth the shekels. Bill |

Now imagine what the difference would be with a proper enclosure and a 13" slim JL sub.

JMHO, but a proper stealth (meaning undetectable) enclosure wouldn't have its butt sticking straight up in the air. (JK, I think...) I prefer not having a car that advertizes there is decent equipment inside ...
Also, given that the Z cabin volume is ONLY 51.6 cubic feet, or 48.6 cubic feet with driver, 45.6 with driver and passenger, don't you think that a 13" sub, even a shallow mount, might just be a tad too much output for someone that wants a bass level pretty much at the same level as the artist and/or sound engineer intended? Just how much do you want to overload the space given cabin gain? Oh, I forgot ...everbody rides around in NH in the winter with the windows down... BTW, I used to live in Atkinson. 13TW5 is not made to sound like a 13" sub necessarily. Design is so you can get a slim sub without sacrificing sound quality. But it does take advantage of the surface area to push the air... It is a very fast moving motor structure and it will and can hit as hard as a 10" sub. It can produca a snappy hard hitting bass, the main characteristics of the sub is best descriibed as a cross between a 12w3v3 and an all mighty 12w6v2.
