bose system: added sub, kept the spare

So, i just had cartoys do my upgrade...ya, ya, i spent WAY too much but lets not get into that :)

I have a 09 Touring so it comes stock with the Bose system.

i added a pioneer 4300 as so many do as well as a rear backup camera. i also added a Alpine single digital chanel amp to power the sub. I kept the bose speakers and retained all of the stearing wheel controls.
The fiberglass sub box they built is SWEET and they covered it in matching vinel to match the trunk. I also had them dynomat the rear as well as the front doors. The best thing is they resessed the sub into the section of the trunk where the stock bose amp is. This allowed me to keep the spare. I added some picts, comments welcome.

once i blow my bose (im sure any day now), i will do that next..... i did this first because adding the door speakers later would be relativly ez and cheap.

Not sure if you have but read this first. It is not as easy as just installing new speakers.

Looks good, basically a shallower version of my box.

What did they charge for the dynomat? A local audio shop here quoted me $600 to dynomat the door panels and trunk. That was much more than I expected it to be.

250 for the dynomat and i think 200 for the install

boy that is pricey. but as long as you like it and you know it was done right. The way I look at things, is its only too expensive if you can't afford it.

..........sooooo I won't be getting any audio installations at car toys...

having ZERO ability with car audio, i am at the mercy of the pros. But it was done very clean and i am very happy with the outcome. ya i paid more then i would have liked, but i have faith it was done right. i got a quote from Audio express, another local installer. it would have been WAY cheaper, but i really felt like i was going to get mugged if i didnt flash the correct gang sign.

i think it looks great! and if your not experienced in car audio, paying someone to do the work is alot cheaper than the headaches of screwing something up.

Yes but there is a big different between paying someone and someone taking advantage of someone.

well, prices tend to go up if you have a retail store, employees, advertising and on hand stock and supplies. Not to mention a business license, insurance, attorneys and accountants.

sooo, for less than $700 he could have bought round trip tickets from NJ to Denver and back, and you would have built a fiberglass box from scratch? Does the $700 need to cover the cost of your hotel stay or do you plan on constructing, fiberglassing, sanding, and upholstering the box in one day?

I havent seen custom fiberglass enclosures from any professional (actual storefront) installers that I considered cheap. They are doing it to make a profit. T

Think about something in your life that you are not good at, how much would you pay to have someone else do it, and feel confident that it is done right.

What I am saying is there is making a profit on your work and taking someone for a ride because they know you need them. I do fiberglass as well but I am not that expensive. As for the travel :rofl2:

The shops ive worked at, and now work with, 700 for that box is about right. To do a 'glass box right and have it look good takes time, and time is money. No offense but i've seen some of your 'glass work, it may have been early while you were learning, but i'm sure your box would have takin a lot more time and would not have looked this good.

You need to understand how this person earns their living and supports their family. Of the $700 installers typically get 40%, 38 in some cases. That's $280 before taxes and around $250 after taxes for something that probably took the better part of a day if not longer. This is provided that none of that $700 went toward materials. So yes you could do it cheaper but a retail installer has to charge prices that ensure they still get paid fairly. If we were to charge your price to do this we spend a day building something and take home $20. That being said stop assuming all shops are out to get people and that we are simply trying to make a living.

just wanted to add an update...its been a few weeks and no buyers remorse. The sound is good and i think i can hold off upgrading the front speakers for quite a while....thanks for all the feedback
