That would be my fault, I could of swarn I remember focal doing a slim line sub when I was looking through a magazine last year Hmmm. JL or Kenwood depending on what you want to spend.

Nice setup..

The Pioneer has a pronounced "spacer" ring on the front face of the speaker and the speaker cone is placed such that it really doesn't need front clearance at any semi-reasonable volume level.

At some point it comes down to how much money you want to spend and how much cargo space you need. I think that this approach really rocks considering cost and and cargo space. It makes the factory system sound like a kid's toy. But better systems can be had if you choose to go big and go with sub boxes and multi-channel amps.

Update:

Installed my Pioneer avic-x930bt on Monday. Took close to 8 hrs, and installed the back up camera. When attempting to move the mute wire over one pin to the left on the pioneer harness, i broke the pin :( Now i have no idea what to do to in order to bypass the nav/dvd function while driving..... sux! but at least everything still works....

Anyways, i LOVE the HU so far and my polk db6501s sound much better!

I plan on ordering the ARC XXD4080 and pioneer shallow mount 10" today, everything else is ready!

Im finally almost finished with my build the only thing left is a speaker grill, redo the carbon fiber film and mounting/tuning my amp! oh, and i bought enough dynamat to do the entire car. but thats gonna have to wait a little while. here are some pic. more to come....

Not bad for a first timer....
oh, and i know the cuts arent perfect. This was all done with a battery powered jigsaw , a drill and some sandpaper. The floor is also in the process of being leveled.

How is everybody holding down their enclosures and preventing bumps/thumps?

My intended approach is to use a fabricated "T" bolt which would bolt from the inside (with gasket) and keep the enclosure and the tire together. This has one obvious disadvantage in the event of a flat but some (?) advantages.

Do your subs bump/thump on uneven road surfaces?

I'm starting mine next week ... also using the Pioneer.)

(I think we should form a DIY subclub ... we can have a secret handshake and everything.)

i havent had any issues with the box or false floor moving around. Im silply using industrial velcro to hold the pieces down, they are very light. they box sits pretty snug on the spare tire. I plan on using some dynomat to ensure its in there tight. I dont think it would come out during an accident. The box would first have to come straight up about a foot and only then could it move around freely in the back. The box is the least of my worries if i get in another accident.

As you know, I am starting my own build ... I'll post pictures of the project as I go along.

I've learned alot from you, Antennahead, mecha1000. jikhead, sigur, chimaera, Guard dad and others attempting the same idea. Many thanks to each of you and others who I may have left out of my acknowledgement.

This build concept is alot more complex than just gluing a bunch of rings together and you're done. Sure, that's one approach but one that doesn't appeal to me. My goal is to advance the overall concept through incremental improvements...

We'll see if I'm successful or not.

thanks! i appreciate the feedback. this took about 50+ hrs and a 'few' cases of beer to build.

I highly recommend using a router to create the rings. It took forever using a jigsaw!

Alot of the 50+ hrs was just figuring the correct way to do it and making sure the pieces for the false floor joined flush.... lots of sanding!
