Stock Sat Antenna w Aftermarket HU
I'm looking to install a aftermarket HU (Pioneer) with their XM module but keep the stock Sirius antenna... I did this (reversed though) on a Chevy Trailblazer and just want to know if it is possible on this car too.
Anyone try this yet? |
If I remember yes it can be done I think it is the same conector.
|
A good place to start would be Best Buy Installation. They'd know for sure.

Matt we gotta link up, Im gonna need some help with my system. I dont wanna go all crazy with it, I wanna keep it classy. I know everything about Mitsubishis but not Nissans.
|
Yeah I worked at BB for a few years... def NOT where I would first go.
|
I worked at Best Buy too, we had very good installers though.
|
I'm sure they all differ... I did some research and it seems that while they will work together, because the XM sats are stationary and the Sirius are orbital, the reception won't be as good by interchanging them. I remember getting some mild dropout on my trailblazer too. I'll probably take the chance though and if it is really bad I'll just switch to a Sirius tuner for my eventual aftermarket radio. Only issue is the features aren't as good and it costs more (for Pioneer at least).

Good info though I did not know that about the satellites. |
Big they will fit according to my additional research (it was me that originally posted too) they just might experience some more frequent occasional dropout... it happened from time to time in my Trailblazer but it wasn't much more severe than the regular antenna.

I wanting to do the same with my aftermarket HU. The stock touring satelite antenna is a XM, not a Sirus. So if I got an XM tuner module, can you use the stock XM antenna? Has anybody done this?
|
They operate in the same frequency band, but not the same frequency. Its a patch antenna that is optimized for what its supposed to listen to.....and what its NOT supposed to listen to. An XM antenna is tuned for XM and the Sirius is tuned for Sirius. So you will not get the best performance. Just get the XM antenna, which in some cases is the antenna and low-noise amplifier in one package, once again all components tuned for what its supposed to receive and reject.

Sorry I geeked out, but yes....the XM and Sirius channel lineup are the same for the most part anyhow. When they were two separate companies, they had different channels. Now being merged, mostly the same types of channels.....with Sirius being slightly more progressive I would say with a few extra rap and rock channels.

Sirius is badass because its got the NFL.

That's great that you guys like Sirus better. Antenna question?
|
Has anyone used the stock antenna for XM or Sirius?
|
You possibly can use the Xm OEM antenna for a Xm box but not for a sirius one.

You can use the stock xm antenna with sirius! I've had mine done for months and my signal actually seems better with aftermarket sirius then the stock xm head unit. Just have to take the factory connector off. The factory sat radio is in the hatch next to the bose amp. Disconnect the antenna from the stock xm box. Remove the white tab then pull the pink connector off. Plug the antenna into your new sirius box.

I am doing stock XM antenna to aftermarket XM head unit/receiver. It won't be done for another month though... I'll let everyone know how it works out.
Anyone know the exact location of the XM box in our cars? |
The unit is in the trunk under the large foam piece towards the middle of the car.
|
I stuffed my new XM unit on top of the white box thing that sits onder the HU. Them had to stuff all the extra cable in there too.

i'm looking at using an alpine sxv200v1 connected to an alpine deck. alpine tells me that the connection to the deck is not standardized (its not ai-net which i could get an extension cable for) so i guess i'll have to get a fakra extension cable? is this what you guys have had to do??

I have used antennas interchangeably and had no issues. If I were say BAF and were installing for a customer I would never use XM with Sirius but if it were my friend for freebie I'd definitely do it. Those antennas are powered by 5V sent down the antenna connector from the XM/Sirius receiver so either will work as long as they get the 5V they need to power on.
My XM factory unit in my Z receives like a** anyway. I have an aftermarket in another car and it's reception is just as bad. XM/SXM turned off the terrestrial feed here in Orlando and since then if I drive under even a small Oak tree my XM signal drops out, practically unusable in my area unless I'm in open sky. I wish they'd turn terrestrial back on but it's not likely. I think the first time in the history of both companies they actually turned a profit last year and it was barely in the black. SiriusXM is still shrinking, every year they reduce expenses by laying people off. |
