You SHOULD upgrade the head unit you can use the base stock unit however it only puts out a very small amount of power, 9 watts, as opposed to the 22 watts most new head units put out.
There are a lot of threads asking exactly what you are asking, search for new speakers, speaker upgrade, upgrade system, new audio system, stock system junk, and so on. Lots of threads on this.
