New rules for installs
 

Effective immediately I will ask every customer who's car I work on to pay at least half the labor cost up front.

Also any used equipment that is brought to me I can not guarantee it to work properly as I do not know the previous condition of the equipment.

I'm not sure why but you get a lot of sketchy people in the car audio/performance industry, customers and installers the like. He is officially on blast but what can you do at this point? I would wash my hands and just be a prick in the future.

Oh I walked away. I was not going to beat the issue to death. Just lesson learned and I move on.

sorry to hear you got burned. i've seen the great work you've done on a ton of cars on this forum and all the advice you have given. Sorry to hear that the bad caught up to the good

Yah, sorry to hear. :( paying 1/2 upfront is understandable and there should be documentation for your terms and conditions...wat you will support, wat will be the customer's responsibility if they brought their own gear, etc.

Ya it was all and all a dark weekend. You all know I love doing car audio and my passion for quality music. This just set me off.

I know what you mean. Business has really picked up it is just something they had to say.

Not sure I would be down with paying half to a person who doesn't have a business license.

I understand you have to cover your ***, but for someone who doesn't know you personally, they have to cover theirs too, you know?

IMO (if you haven't already), get licensed, bonded, and insured if you want to start taking deposits. Trust has to go both ways. :)

Wow, dude if you're doing this stuff without your paperwork in order you need to remedy that IMMEDIATELY. You seem like a cool guy, but all it takes is 1 mishap and you could be sued for everything you've got.

A friend was doing alarm installs on the side, and got sued for his wiring causing an accident. I've seen dozens of his projects, and his wiring was always super neat. Some kid rear ended someone, and said the alarm wiring cause his foot to get snagged up. I believe the kid lied, but his parents ended up suing my friend.

Get a small garage rented and do it ligit already, this way if you are not done with their car and they don't pay, you can lock the car in the garage...

You can't even put a mechanics lean on a case like this because, you are just doing it as a hobby, making cash on the side... As good as you may be... you are still not a business.

Incorporate yourself, self employed... get a tax id number... get a name registered... get a business licence for installing car audio.. Start printing receipts for your work and get deposits with a written document... Yes you will have to pay some taxes, but that is part of owning a business...
