Nice concept! I'm thinking about building another CarPC as well. The last project worked nicely, but died before I ever had any chance of putting it in a car. The draw back was the size of the box. It was a hand-built acrylic box with mini-ITX board, modified X-Fi soundcard, and 2 CF card slots: one for OS and app, and the other for music storage.

Anyhow, I've been looking at building one again. For audio out, I may go with USB audio. Check out Home | miniDSP

They offer small DSP boards for audio processing (cost of plug-in apps are $10 each with lifetime updates). Depending on the combination of boards, you can get it to accept analog in, SPDIF, or USB. Output can be digital and/or analog.

So I was thinking about building a small computer, use the USB as audio, and the MINI DSP board will connect directly to my amps. Not only will I get clean audio, the MINI DSP has advanced audio processing capabilities (EQ, delay, xover, etc.).

Whatever it is, I'd like to be able to get access to my music and switch songs faster than the current DDX-814 head unit.

Cool, just do not see it being worth it now a days, with head units able to do most things pc's an do and than there is tablets as well.

Either way man very cool hope it works out for you.

DIG, unless you are going to do a insanely nice setup with amps and speakers running a DAC out of usb for audio would be like hooking up a 900 dollar set of headphones up to a headphone jack of a cheap dollar store mp3 player. Also make sure your audio is all in FLAC or you will hear all the errors compressed music has.

Yeah, but can any headunits do this?

Yes just need one of the 4 or 5 motor monitoring devices out there and a screen like a head unit. And as Dreamer showed.

Need some black material to finish the bezel foam. It's works perfect, 3G windows phone with WIFI program running.

What program is this and how do I get it. Also, while that screen is up can you still play music? Thanks.

Okay, can your headunit do this?

The video starts recording as soon as the car is turned on and the carpc starts. It normally records at 720p during driving. The program records video and sound and automatically compresses the video and audio. It will automatically delete the older videos to free room. No input is needed from the driver for the surveillance.

bigaudiofanat 06-12-2011 07:52 PM

Some can or you can use a device to record on a dedicated device under your seat.

Ugh, first XP, then IE? Nice concept, though :)

I knew a 9inch screen would fit in there. Time to upgrade my screen because 7inches just ain't cutting it.

It doesn't require an insanely nice setup. It's not just about quality, but it's the convenience of not needing to rely on the sub-par onboard audio device, analog out of a discrete sound card, or even justify for an expensive audio processor. There are two choices: SPDIF or USB. Not many portable devices or computers have SPDIF output, so USB is the easiest and cheapest way to go.

The $10 plug-in is just a visual interface for the Analog Devices DSP, which probably has better EQ adjustment (Paremetric EQ, actually) than whatever the sound card drivers has to offer. The settings are stored on the board.

So with USB, I can plug into whatever device that has a USB port and supports the USB audio device standard. The only drawback is that this board has 2V pre-outs.

Easy connection:
PC or Tablet via single USB Cable -> USB Streamer Board & miniDSP -> Amps
