What are some good speakers?
Even, though these speakers are not for a Z, I still wanted to hear thoughts from someone.
I was looking at these Alpine Speakers. How do I install those tweeters? I'm totally new to installing car stereos and speakers, so yeah, I'm a n00b. Any other suggestions on which to pick up? In Dash Decks, too? Thank a lot. I'm appreciate it. I'll Rep for those that give me some good insight. EDIT: Also, what's the difference between those that say 2-way, 3-way, etc? |
It is really gonna depend on the application. The speakers are going to sound different in different sized cars. Also are you going to be running the speakers off the head unit or through a separate amp? Personally I just got a set of Focal speakers that are the Polyglass series in my 370. When the tech demonstrated them they sounded better to me than the JL Audios. That said I love the JL Audios that I have running off a JL Audio 4 channel amp that are in my Tiburon. Both cars have Pioneer head units because They look clean and have all the bells and whistles without putting flashing lights and sirens on them. The other thing to take into consideration is type of music. Some are going to hit harder in the lower ranges and some will be crisper at the high ranges. Hard to get both and not pay an arm and a leg. So if your listening to the rap music go with something that performs in the lower range better and if its a lot softer of a music style go for a better higher range performer. The best advice I can give is find a shop that has many speakers you can experience and take a CD or Ipod and connect it up and see what sounds better to you. The other thing to consider is are you adding a subwoofer or anything? How loud do you listen to the music? Lastly fitment, not all 6.5" will fit the same, some have lower profiles than others. What kind of head unit and what kind of equalizer does it have or do you plan to use? Equalizers can do alot to help you boost the performance of the speakers since you can tweak things in different ranges if the head unit or separate device has those features(Pioneer does). This should all be taken into account.
apologies for the wall of text. |
As for 2-way vs 3-way
I am posting a quote since I already did 1 wall of text. "The difference is the 2-way has a tweeter and a midrange and the 3-way has a tweeter, a midrange, and a woofer. Remember there isn't a "right" choice in the two. The 3-ways will generally play deeper and more bass. They also have 3 components that have to blend with eachother so the sound quality can be reduced due to more internal components. (If the crossover components are cheap, it can really show) 2-ways are more simple, usually less load on the amplifier than 3-ways, not as much bass, but can be more detailed because it's only 2 drivers integrated and only 1 crossover point. I'd say that if you have the power, and like the volume loud get the 3-way. If you are concerned with sound quality and not so much bass then look at 2-ways. A 2-way with a subwoofer works too. That's 2.1 though and if you don't have a decent subwoofer, your bass may not go well with the 2-ways." I found this on a forum cause typing it all out was just too long and its late  |
No amp. I just want to upgrade the stock system really. From the radio to all 4 speakers. No subs, either.
As far as music: (Relatively semi-loud) Enjoy those. |
Thank for that 2-way vs 3-way info. I appreciate it. You've earned your rep.

A lot of times you have to be careful dropping new speakers into the stock radio, since the stock amplifier in the radio tends to be rated just for the setup that is in the car. The factory speakers might have a unique impedance or are low wattage. In the case of different impedance you could blow the amp in the radio. In the case of low wattage the radio amp may not be able to drive upgraded speakers and they can sound worse than the originals.
Most installers will want you do do both (speakers and head unit/amp) just so they don't have to know each cars unique stock stereo specifications. |
Look for a good setup of 6.5" components (seperate mid-range and tweeter). The Z has good locations for both speaker types (door and dash). Beats a combined setup like 2 or 3-way.

what is a good all around setup and brand to look for?
|
Yeah, I was actually planning on replacing the head unit, too.

It's all about how picky you are about sound and how deep you can reach into your pockets. Some people love the Bose and some thinks it's crap...some love the bass to shake the crap outta every car around them, and some like a full sound that is tight and hard, but not teeth rattling.
