I would say no at first by looking at this picture, but it might though with a little custom work. On the iPod 4G, yes you need wifi, I think the idea is it 'works' since it can use the apps from the iPod touch, minus anything needing data connection.

Just did a quick read from the manual, looks like the AppRadio does have a GPS antenna so it might just use Google Maps from your phone and the GPS antenna for signal.

Neptune: Did you install this in a Z? I would owe you if you could post some pics. Alternatively, I'm also in Philly, I'd love to see this thing, as I am very seriously considering putting one in. It can be had for about $300 online - I'm still reading up on it, but for that price, I may have to get it.

Please share your experience/review of this unit.

How do u like it? Saw some poor reviews on amazon.

It's great, I like the clean look of the radio, it's simple to use and for the money it cant be beat as long as your an Iphone 4 owner.

Neptune - thanks for the pics. I've read a bunch on the unit and the reviews on Amazon/Crutchfield; besides the high rate of defective units, the biggest problem seems to be that 1) you need to use the iPhone to switch between apps, and 2) you still need to use the iPhone's screen to input things like destination address into MotionGpsX, as well as for almost all of that app's menus, etc.

I know that Pioneer is promising updates, but my gut says not to hold my breath. I've looked at all the CD/DVD/Radio/Sat/Navi 2Din units and I hated the interfaces on cost of them. You're right, for the money this seems like a great buy, and the simple elegant interface was much superior to the other units that I saw, but the implementation of how this unit works (from all I've read) drove me up the wall.

Can I ask what happens when you get a BT call? I assume it drops you say out of MotionGpsX and into the Phone screen; can you then navigate just via the AppRadio (without using the iPhone) back to MotionGpsX???

Neptune - sorry to bug you, but a few more question.

1. Do you mind terribly taking a few more pics, maybe larger ones, especially of the gaps/fit between the radio and your dash; just trying to get an idea of how good a fit it was.

2. Did you do the install yourself? How was it? How long did it take? Is there any wire splicing or is it more of a plug and play??? I'm contemplating getting this thing to try it out, but the idea of putting it in, and then possibly taking it out is not fun?

Well time to bring this back alive: AppRadio 2.0

Quote:

The latest iteration touts the same functionality as the original, but adds compatibility for many of the latest Android smartphones equipped with either the Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) or a micro HDMI connection. It's boasting a 7-inch (800 x 480) capacitive touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth for hands-free calling, an input for an optional vehicle-mounted rear facing back-up camera, an input for interfacing with the vehicle's steering wheel controls and two sets of pre-amp outputs for connection to external amplifiers. The new guy will be shipping in April for $499

Looks like the new unit has a larger screen (7" vs. 6.1") and support for Android, but that's about it in terms of anything really useful, that I have been able to discern.

Too bad, Pioneer never released any firmware upgrades for the original unit and I'm guessing same will be true of this unit. I almost pulled the trigger on this thing, but in the end, there was just too much wrong with the way it interacted with the iPhone, which overall made me decide against it.

Hmmm it's like Pioneer listened to me about needing a larger screen an additional preouts haha. Now this is something to consider.

I'd much rather have a nicer head unit and a carputer. Yeah it'll cost more but it won't suck.

I've installed a few app radios and have yet to have a happy customer. First of all this is in now way shape or form a pioneer manufactured radio. It shares most of its features with Advent double din radios. Each customer complained of an unresponsive touch screen and an inability to use apps as well as the screen freezing randomly until the car is turned off. Physically the harness and chassis are identical to the Advent Adv-u630 as is the gps antenna. This is an indication that this is simply a cheap audiovox product that someone at pioneer saw somewhere and bought the rights too and just rebadged it as a pioneer product. Overall the appradio is a waste of money

Just installed AppRadio2 in my little brothers 300c with the Boston Acoustics sound system. This actually works much Better than I anticipated and I like it a lot. Yes it lacks certain features but I love how well the UI moves almost fluid like. Much more responsive than any other touchscreen I've used. Videos and pics work great. Pandora works great. I LOVE the free gps app that you can download. It's fast and works great as well!!! All for free!

My only gripe about it as of right now is,(2 gripes) is that we haven't been able to successfully communicate over Bluetooth. The mic works great and the other person can hear us perfectly, but their voice does not play thru the speakers for hands free. I'm sure we're missing something here. Also, the other gripe I have is that the warning screen that displays and tells you not to drive, sometimes the "Ok" button isn't lit up but that might have something to do with the relay I added. We have to unplug the iPhone and plug it back in and then the "ok" button lights up and all is good.
