But why would an audio company just base it on smartphone O/S numbers? The bottom line is there are more devices with iPod connectors floating around than all the other devices.

weird... i was reading somewhere not long ago that most of the headunits just over the horizon were actually running versions of android based software, no iOS...

I think a larger 7" display would look better than 6.1" in there. Too much dead space on the sides. Being able to access some of the extra features are nice though. It's like having a carputer in the Z. Being able to send an email or surf a site might be nice. However, trying to actually send an email and typing on an onscreen keyboard, right if front of our 6spd manual might make it more difficult.

Price is expected to be around 500.

Pioneer AppRadio hands-on -- Engadget

Quote:
Our big gripe here -- and it is a big one -- is that AppRadio is short on apps. There are currently only four apps running on the system: Rdio, Pandora, INRIX, and MotionX-GPS Drive. The first two, are, as you might already know, music apps, and the last two are a GPS and traffic app, respectively. All of these applications have been designed specifically to meet Pioneer's standards, with a focus on safety. When it comes to Pandora, that means you won't be able to set up any new stations while driving and, similarly, search functions have been disabled on both Rdio and Pandora.

After watching the video I will now pass on this. I'd rather get the 4300DVD. My brother has the 4200DVD in his car and it works flawlessly. iPhone controls are just as easy, it has a larger screen, more features, and actually has the ability to play CD and DVD. The AppRadio doesn't have much going for it yet.

I will also pass or not recomend this to my customers. Just do not see this being big or being big yet. I would still go with a normal head unit like the kenwoods or alpines.

This will catch on as the price gets lower.
Kenwood and other companies are looking into it.

Until they come up with a way so you no longer need to use the phone to access let's say GPS commands, I don't see it being so popular.

Once Apple allows the ability to control apps in the phone via Pioneer screen I see this being very usefull.

Otherwise you can do the same thing with motionX GPS and more with an I-phone 4 and a KENWOOD DDX418 or 318... at a much chaper price and you have DVD playback.

Pioneer's AppRadio delivers iPhone integration, automotive and audio bliss for $400 -- Engadget

Another small update to this unit. Pricing is set for $400 MSRP. AppRadio now has access to your iPhone's contacts, calendar, videos, and photos as well. Still not really worth it, but might soon if they get better app integration.

I think this unit is more pointed towards your typical Apple product owner, who does not have the tech knowledge and just wants it because it is 'cool' or hip. Pioneer could easily make this a contender, use the iPhone as part of the load for processing things and making the head unit faster and integrate more audio features, but doubt that will happen.

Will this fit in the cubbyhole hole? It says you can also use the iPod 4g with this. What I want to know is if you use the navigation on the iPod don't you need a wifi signal to make it work?
