I had a 5th Gen Video iPod with 40 Gig mechanical drive and it had the same issues on start up. Someone mentioned the boot up time of the Mechanical HDD devices was too slow, this seems to be the proven case with my 2009.
Forgive me -- I'm not clear on what you mean? I have a gen 5 nano; what do I need to know to include/swap to one with a solid state drive?

Only the classic has a hard drive, rest has no moving parts and is faster. I had the same problem as the op once in a a while, changed my USB plug with a Griffen I had lying around and works perfectly. But 160gb is a pain to search through. Been using bluetooth audio instead. Google Music let's u upload 20k songs for free! Helps to have unlimited data though.
