Default Sound Deadening

Hey there,

I just installed my new exhaust but the drone between 2-3krpm is a bit much for me, especially since I spend most of my time in that range on the highway.

Would sound deadening over the entire hatch area kill an appreciable amount of it? I can tell the most of the noise is coming through the bare metal in the hatch but want to see if y'all think it would help or not.

The sound deadening I am planning on using is BQuiet Extreme btw.

In short... no.

Drone isn't really something that you are going to be able to tune out with sound deadening. Those frequencies are very hard to combat, so it'd take some very heavy stuff throughout the entire car. I'm talking well over 100 lbs worth of deadening. And even then you'll never fully get rid of it... you'll just slightly tone it down.

Your best bet is to replace the exhaust with something that doesn't drone, or pull out your calculator and figure out what size resonator branch pipes you need to weld on to your exhaust.

That's what I thought, sigh... I think I will do the sound deadening anyway just to get rid of the road noise that comes through the hatch area and look into some bullet resonators in the mid pipe area of this exhaust. Either that, or I will look into the helmholtz resonator. What would you rather do? I don't really want to give up the exhaust quite yet haha.

Helmholtz resonator should do the trick if your calculations are correct. One of our forum members has a DIY for constructing them.

FWIW, I deadened the entire hatch on my Z with Second Skin Damplifier and Luxury Liner Pro. Some heavy stuff. It does nothing.

The car is a hatch, so unless you do everything, doing only one section is going to have little to no effect.

That is a good point. It is a shame since there is no drone between 3-4krpm and I had to drive home in 5th to stay in that range. If that was how the exhaust sounded between 2-3krpm, it would be PERFECT. I am thinking of doing a 28" Helmholtz resonator like Anamoly, thanks for the advice mustang!
