Anyone have any experience/recommendations for a back-up camera system? I have a non-navi Touring model and would like to increase visibility when backing. Considering a wired system with a 3.5 - 5 inch monitor that I can place on the visor.

Not interested in high-end systems that replace the audio system.

The ones I looked at, Pyle, Audiovox, VR3, did not get very good ratings.

Thanks,

I found a backup camera system that looks like it would work fine for us. Quality and price are both good.
5? Monitor with CCD Silver License Plate Backup Camera Backup Monitor & Camera - Tadi Brothers

Now the issue comes to installation. I can use velcro to attach the monitor to the visor (vanity mirror) and the camera attaches to the license plate.

I can power the system from the backup lights. Running the video cable from the monitor to the camera concerns me. I don't want to tear the interior apart and yet I want it all hidden.

Surely there are members who have run wiring from the dash area to the rear for audio or the fog light. Here is your chance to share your experience.

Thanks,

rangercarol

If you go to the DIY section or the Car audio videos 1-6 I think, it documents all you need to do. Also someone documented this exact install, search the backup cam from the first page. I agree, the car is unsafe with its blind spots and big backend. I did a complete audio install using only the videos to guide me.

check out MASTER_LY profile, then search his pics. excellent. Also, dont be afraid. I studied this for 3 day instead of working, and when it cam down to it, I had all the panels and foam/tire out in 5 minutes. Piece of cake!

considering the amount of work needed to mount the camera (correctly) you're already kinda halfway done modding your HU.... something to consider.

Have you considered the wireless version?

Thanks to all who responded with helpful videos and photos. I am going to get the recommended toolkit.

I see how to run the video cable through the center but I think I will run it on the left side. I would rather remove the door sill than the console and dash, especially since i am mounting the monitor on the driver's sunvisor. I saw hints on removing the sills.

One last comment - wireless would have been much simpler, but all the reviews say that it is subject to interference and the picture is never as good.

Thanks,

rangercarol

I wanna do a backup camera, but I dont wanna do any seperate monitors, they look cheap when people try to custom mount them, just my personal opinion though.

I have completed the installation of the back up camera. It works well even if it may not be as aesthetically pleasing as the factory unit. I connected power to the backup lights so that the monitor and camera turn on when in reverse. Note that the camera is in the license plate bracket.

Backing up is not such an adventure now.

Thanks for the install videos and the Master-ly photos; they saved me all kinds of time and aggravation. I removed all the cargo area trim but, fortunately, I was able to fish the video and power cables from the cargo area to the front door sill without having to remove the parcel shelf trim.

It has been raining here for days, so the car is pretty dirty, but I didn't want to wait before reporting in.

So, which brand/model of camera did you get? I like the idea of putting it on the license plate like your picture..

This is the backup camera system that I chose. Quality and price are both good. Service is also responsive. Total cost was about $240, including shipping.

For testing, I used velcro to attach it to the driver's vanity mirror. So far, we are pleased with it. The package includes a frame that is intended for inserting the monitor in the dash or visor. When I find time, I will embed the monitor in the visor itself. I don't expect it to be an easy task.

Default Back up camera - Follow up

I completed the finishing step this weekend. While I was pleased with the safety provided by the monitor, using velcro to attach it to the visor was not a satisfactory solution. It worked fine but I didn't like the way it looked when the visor was down to block the sun.

I spent a few hours modifying the visor to insert the monitor. Sounds simple; but the visor is more than just foam inside. It has some 1/8" rod running through it for strength. However, with a little careful cutting and bending, I was able to embed the monitor in the visor.

As I said earlier, this is a 5" monitor. If I had to do it again, I would opt for 3.5-4" because it would be a lot easier to install.

In case you are wondering; I installed it upside down to get the video cable on the top side. Fortunately, this monitor has the capability to change orientation of the image. It can also accept two video feeds in case you want to show movies or add a second camera.
