The additional functions provided by the Car Kit package also trick the Nav unit into thinking the car isn't moving, therefore the functions normally blocked when the car is in motion are freed up. This is done in one nice and neat, harnessed package and I for one think it is a good deal. Note: The Pioneer HU in my truck uses a simple relay for unlocked DVD functions as well.
