question for u audiophiles
hope this question will fit here. anyway i'm no audiophile but have found out through trial and error that playing a burned cd sounds better than using a aux cable hooked to my iphone. i use itunes for burning my cd's...
anyway i read that by converting to mp3 files i can put more songs on to a cd is this true and would the sound quailty be effected.. thanks for any suggestions............ |
Yes. You can put more files on a CD if you make mp3 files over uncompressed files.
Yes. The sound quality will be reduced because the files are compressed and at a reduced bit rate. |

There are arguments that given the current algorithms used in compressed music that 320kbps is almost indistinguishable from the uncompressed track. Witness the amount of quality in MPEG-4 video files vice MPEG-2, which only several years back was the DVD standard.
That said, I'm a purist and rip only in Apple/WMA lossless. It may be arguable that I can't tell the difference between those an 320kbps files, but I don't like "throwing away bits". |
My neighbors thought the same thing. So they had me rip ALL their cd's all 723 I think it was into 320 after getting polk lsi25's and a new onkyo receiver they could hear the difference even more than they did with the sony receiver and the klipsch bellas they had. So I had to redo all of them in uncompressed. If you start ripping do it once in uncompressed.

The only problem with ripping uncompressed is that not all headunits will recognize those file types. In my opinion the 370Z is an absolutely terrible platform for listening to audio. So terrible that I doubt you'll notice the difference between 320 kbps MP3 and uncompressed. You'll be too busy listening to all the rocks chatter off your fender wells.
