New Subs, now what?
I just bought 2 kicker 12 l7s, zenclosure, jackhammer amp, and clarion nx500 deck,...where is the best place to run the power wire, through the door or fire wall and will putting the amp under the driver seat result in a overheating risk?
|
Just some info, the kicker L7's like to be ported if this is going in a z I highly recommend you return them and get one or two rockford fosgate punch stage 3 12's instead of the kickers. Also mtx jackhammer amps "depends on model" can be poorly made look at a kicker amp if you decide to return. I am not busting on what you bought just some recommendations for your z. Also unless your plan to be heard from 2 blocks away 2 12's is not needed. You own a z that is already a lot of attention.
Anyway take a look at my z installs on my link. You will see where I have ran the power wire behind the battery through the rubber grommet there. Depending on the amp and if it is a class d or a/b it my over heat under the seat. If it is a class d than no problems a class a/b may. Here is the thread plenty of z installs to look over. http://www.the370z.com/north-east-re...me-know-3.html |
I'm a big fan of KICKER and MTX. They both offer great products at reasonable prices. The average person wanting to upgrade the stereo in their daily driver will be very happy with them.
I've installed my share of Kicker subs from comps to L7's, 8's to 15's and they all kill in sealed boxes. Yes there are some benefits to using a ported box. There are also benefits to using a sealed box they are cleaner, tighter, and plenty loud in sealed boxes. Putting these subs in a sealed box is perfectly acceptable you wont hurt them and you wont be disappointed. That's one loud setup you're working on. As for the Jackhammer amp no its not the best series of MTX amps but they are great for the price. The monoblock amps are D class and have fans in them it should be fine under the seat. I hope you got the JH1200 as it will run at 1ohm and have enough power for those subs. |
Not two of them in such a small enclosure such as the zecnlosure if it was a larger box sealed would be fine but they are going to starve in that box.
|
I didnt say I recommended the Zenclosure I just said sealed. You are right the Zenclosure is to small for two L7 12's. If your willing to return subs, then returning the box and building one that will be large enough for them is another option. Having to choose your subs based on the restrictions of a pre-fab box is a good reason to learn how to build your own box for the subs you want.
|
As of right now we do not know if he wants to take is entire trunk up for two subs, I doubt it but could be wrong. If he wants to go with a zenclosure I again recommend one or two RF punch series subs as they are much better made for sealed enclosures than kickers. Also much better quality and will produce tighter bass.

You can get more airspace with a custom box without taking any more hatch space than the Zenclosure (same footprint + enough airspace). Think outside the square box.
The RF being better and higher quality than Kicker is just silly. |
I have done FG before, just very expensive I am not sure if he is buying kicker and mtx that he has the budget for FG.
Do some research RF is much better quality than kicker where they are just there to throw out bass. I have put both in cars and use to actually run a RF punch stage 2 in my hatchback car, was a great and tight sub where as the kickers are more muddy loud bass. |
It would take very little fiberglass to make the box bigger most of it would still be wood. $150 for a pre-fab box is not cheap you can build the Zenclosure for $50 that leaves $100 for fiberglass. Thats more than enough to complete the box and it wont cost anymore than a Zenclosure.
Wow you sure get upset when someone else has an opinion. I just wanted to give my opinion and did not mean to upset the mighty BIGAUDIOFANAT. I know you think you're the only person on the site that really knows what they're doing but let me remind you who you are talking to. Quote:
I'd like to apologies to the OP for getting a little off topic. I will leave this thread now, if you want an open minded opinion or have a question please PM me. |
Never said I was the only one, just recommend something you seem to be getting bent out of shape over me recommending a better sub for a good price but as I said everyone has opinions. I apologize if I ofended just seem to be recommending when neither of us know what the OP wants.
Your FG was nice but you said yourself you did not like how your subs were setup, I think I mentioned somewhere in there about them being faced the other way would produce better sound. |
First, the Jackhammer MTX amps are not their top amps, but do have a lower failure rate then most other amps on the market at their price point.
Second, RF nor Kicker are what they once were, and in my opinion both...well i wouldn't run either. Third, MTX does make some damn fine subs and speakers for the money, round or square. if you don't think they do it maybe time for a listen |
See, i dont know much about speakers, but i did get the upfire zenclosure box, its a lil bigger than the norm, but does it really make that much of a difference? i got the kickers because they are from a friend, never used in the box for $100 for the 2 and i got the amp from my nephew for free. And it is the JH1200.

I spent less than $1k for the box, clarion nx500, amp, 2x subs, wires, and swi-jack.
