Rear view camera(s)
I don't feel a need for a back-up camera. I do, however, feel side-looking cameras would be very useful. I cannot see if a car is coming when I am backing out of a parking space, until I am way out into the aisle. The rear pillars just completely block the view. Anyone else have this paranoia that they're at risk when backing out of a parking space? Anyone tried side-firing camera(s)? Anyone know of a compact switch to allow selection of the (left-looking, right-looking) cameras (baseband video, I presume?)?

I know on the JDM version there is a side view camera option as well as the rear view camera. DeLRo posted some screen shots of how to get to this diagnostic menu, and within that menu allows you to choose 'no camera', rear view camera' or rear and side view camera, so i presume that it is possible. we've got a bunch of people working on getting hte rear view camera for us 09 and 10 guys set in motion, and i know i would, and i assume some others would definitely be interested in getting the side view option as well.
the instructions below are for a 2010, so i'm not sure if you can access the same menu on the '09s. are you an 09 or 10? Quote:

I have a 2010, but with a base stereo. I will, someday, be changing the HU to one with camera capability. While I may find one with multiple camera inputs, I may not want to go that high end. Plus, if switching cameras involve more than 1 or 2 button (touch-screen) pushes, I don't think I'd find it practical. So, I was thinking of a single camera input, hopefully activated by selecting reverse gear. Then a switch on the center console to quickly select left or right cameras. A split view screen would be a nice alternative.
But, I am also curious if anyone has actually mounted side view cameras. Where? Have pics of the install? Thanks! |

maybe put a strobe in your JDM fog lamp relayed to your reverse lamp so that people know something's flashing while they drive down the aisle and you backing out... im sure radioshack sells strobe circuits.

One thing about what you want to do, you will probably have to have a input setup for each camera. I do not think the aftermarket head units can do split screen.

A tail-light install sounds interesting. Side view mirrors are too far forward to help with my (perceived) problem. Drilling holes in the hatch or sail panels would not be my preference (to put it mildly!). Something hanging out the back by the rear license plate is the default, but I'm hoping for something a little more elegant. Hmm, maybe built into a rear spoiler....
I've worked with some production equipment that used a dual prism setup to achieve split vision with one camera.... I'll have to look thru our equipment bone pile The problem with any warning device is... how to put it... people here are too stupid, self-absorbed, distracted... you name it. They'll be texting away, run into you, then swear it was your fault (hard to dispute if you're backing out of a parking space). If you don't have these problems where you live, then color me jealous! it could be pretty difficult to get the promiximity looking through the small screen because you dont have much reference points in the shot. you'll be able to tell if there's a car coming or not, but how far.... kinda difficult.
you might end up waiting when you could've pulled out. |

sorry did not know it was different for 2010. I installed it in my 2009 G37 and it works perfect. I used it for my HKS Camp 2 Display. But it has 2 inputs. And FYI navtool's bay store is about $100 cheaper
