Default Places to building speakers

Hey there,

because the 370Z will not be shown in Germany before june i want to check the possiblities to upgarde the sound system of the car. I am in car hifi competitions and have some special needs
My plan is to move my 3 way speakersystem from car into the new one.

Which speakers size fits into the hole on the dashboard (3,5" or 4"?). Is there some space behind? Most times I need around 1 liter of volume.

How do I get speakercables into the door. Is there a tube or do i have to drill through a plug?

Damping the door ... easy access or do I have to strip down the complet door?

A-pillar ... is there the airback behind? Or are these seperated sections of the A-pillar?

Maybe someone have some pics? I have not found the right one so far. If someone be so nice ... I need some pics of the speakermount in the dashboard.

You might want to follow what DIGItonium is doing, and his threads/albums.

And hello from the US!

[Blushes] Thanks! Album updated with some trunk dimensions and speaker box sketches. I don't even have my car yet, so I'm relying on others to provide some measurements. I've not had a 12" sub since high school (15" Kicker Classic in my '87 200SX at best before switching to a 10W3), so my goal is to have a 12" setup in my car. The subwoofer is Elemental Designs newest sub: ED5.12. It is a hefty sub and quite overkill for my needs (compared to a 10W3), but is a neat looking sub without melting my credit card.

Other owners already started on their builds, so they've confirmed the door drivers are 6.5" and the tweeter is around 1". The speakers I will be using for this project is the Diamond HEX S600s. I bought these speakers from a former Z owner, and he only used them for a few months. Since I only have the front speakers to deal with, I want them to sound their very best while keeping the stock look.

The amplifiers are a pair of Elemental Designs NINE.2. The Diamonds will be fed 100x2, which is more than adequate for my needs. The ED5.12 (dual 2 ohm coil) will be wired for single 4 ohm load, and the NINE.2 will be bridged for 400x1 operation.

To make these speakers sound their best, I'm looking at the Kenwood DDX-814 (Release April '09). The current model is DDX-812. All I know about this head unit is the 13-band parametric EQ, adjustable crossovers, etc. If time permits, I may pull the cover off and see if there are any op amps available to swap (Burr Brown OPA 2107!!!)

This is as simple as it gets for my audio setup without breaking the bank. It is no competition by any means. I care about enjoying my high quality encoded 80's tunes... on a USB flash drive. :-)

Thx for your answer ...

My equipment so far:
DLS Nobelium 6.5
Selfmade Midrange
Selfmade 10" Woofer
self modded BRAX X2400
self modded BRAX X1400
self modded Alpine PXA 701
Alpine W202R

My first ideas:
midrange into the corner of the windows (mirror) or into the dashboard with reflexion on the front window.
Hightone into the a-pillar direct to the listener,
6.5 midwoofer into the door (closed volume around 4-6l possible?).
Since the 10" woofer needs around 8-10l, it may be possible to place them under the seats?

Nice! I was close to getting the DLS Nobelium 2-way components when a former Z owner approached me about speakers he was selling.

How deep is your subwoofer? If you can fit it in your MR2, then it'll fit the Z. You should have enough room to fit a single compact 10" subwoofer in the strut bar area (13" depth flush). Behind the seats are small "cubby" holders. If you have some compact devices, you can mount them in that location.

I have to guess ... i think around 15cm (7-8"). If i use the place in the trunk i have to work with reflexion ... a little bit tricky. or i can use a bassreflex with runtime problem ... grrr

You've got me scratching my head on this one. I was hoping to direct the subwoofer towards the front, but I end up not having room for the amps without eating up usable trunk space. [shrugs]

See what you can do with the spare tire area as some users have already done.
