New JL W5 installed today!
Just got a JL W5 installed in the spare tire well. A JL HD 4/600 amp is pushing it and the JL VR 6.5 component set I put in the doors along with the half inch JL tweet in installed in the dash. It sounds mean as hell. I will post pictures tomorrow if I get a chance. The guys made me a box so you can't even tell the sub is there.

There are two panels that pop off so you can access the screws to take of the door panel. The first is up by the door handel. The panel is shaped like a C. Use a flathead with a peice of cloth on the tip to get the panel off. The second one is a rectangle panel underneath the armrest. Once you undo the screws behind the panels the only thing holding the door is some clips. Be sure to pull the door straight out toward you. Use a door popping tool if you have one and if not a flathead with rag will do the trick also. Just be careful and take your time.

First I took out the radio and replaced it with a Eclipse CD3200 radio. I am waiting on the nav cause I am still undecided. When I purchase nav it will fill up the entire double din slot. I put in a JL Audio VR 6.5 component set in the doors and flush mounted the tweet in the plastic piece that cover the mirror mount on the inside. I replace the dash tweeters with a pair of JL audio half inch tweets. So my highs basically scream now. As far as base I put a JL Audio W5 13.5" speaker where the spare was and flush mounted it with the surface so I was able to put the carpet back over it and you can't even tell it's there. Then pushing all these speakers I bought a JL Audio HD600 4 channel amp and the front channel is hooked to the tweets and the component set and the rear channel hooked to the sub. THe amp was mounted in the rear still but behind the suspension. The sound quality in the car is ten times better now and I am very happy with what I have. If I want to have a lot of base I can crank the bass up or I can just have a little base with the system. I have had the bose package in several Nissans I have owned and all of them have been very dissappointing. So I decided not to spend the extra money this time and get one without the upgrades cause I usually end up upgrading anyway. You best bet is keeping the headunit you have and upgrade your speakers. There are kits out to be able to hook an amp up to the factory headunit. I had to do that on my Murano becuase of the integration with the screen and the heating controls. Good luck on whatever you do.

+1 wanna see pics badly! how much did the setup cost you? I looked up the amp and it was between 400-600 bucks just for that! I want to replace the speakers and put in the kenwood DNX5120. would i need an amp to power it or would the receiver be able to handle it?

Sorry it took so long to post. I've been working some crazy hours.
Ok here it is broken down. 1. They emptied the spare well out. They kept the foam in that held the tools. If you wanted a bigger box these could be removed though. Sub1.JPG 2. The sub. This is a JL Audio 13.5" W5. This is a shallow mount sub. I never thought it would give off as much bass as it does. Sub2.JPG 3. This is the basic box they built for the sub. Nothing special just 3/4 inch MDF with a small mod. for the spare tire mount. Sub3.JPGSub4.JPG 4. Next level is the factory foam. It fits perfectly back on without haveing to mod it. They did put some foam tape on the underneath to make sure it didn't rattle against the box. Sub5.JPG 5. Next they cut a peice of 1/4 inch MDF to sit right on top of the foam. This is the uncarpeted pic but it did get carpeted as you will see below. Sub6.JPG 6. See here it is carpeted and fitting nicely around the sub. This is the last layer you will actually see the sub anymore. I wanted it to be unnoticable as possible. The car is flashy enough. Sub7.JPG 7. This layer they cut a piece of 1/4 inch MDF to match the layout of the carpet and cut the hole for the sub. Then they routed out a square and put a peice of sturdy metal grating in so I could still set things in my trunk without damaging the sub. You cannot see the grate of course though because they carpeted the whole piece. Sub8.JPG 8. And this is how it looks now. Everyday.... can't even tell it's there until I turn it up and the Z on the carpet bounces. Looks pretty neat actually. Sub9.JPG And this last pic shows the loc. of the amp. This space is right behind the strut tower bar and is accessed once you remove all your trunk carpet. Right now there is just a foam there. Amp1.JPG Hope you all enjoyed the pics. If you have any questions I will try to answer them to the best of my knowledge. Oh and the cost of the setup ran close to $2000 but it is mostly in equipment. But the HD amps are worth it. The amp won't even turn off if it gets to hot, it just lowers its watts and continues to pump. Also my lights don't even dim any when the bass notes hit. Very impressive. Like they always say "you get what you pay for."

I would also like to know the particulars of this enclosure. Its really stealth and I like that.
Does the carpeted trunk mat over the subwoofer grill muffle the bass? Can you show a pic of your amplifier installation? I would like to see how its mounted. Thanks. Nice System!! |

Sweeeet! Glad you posted pics of the box so people can see how much airspace it needs and that it wont fit in side the tire itself.
