Actually underpowered is much more likely head units only put out 22 watts tops RMS. Unless he is using the stock speakers and in that case it could damage them with loud volume. But as he said he did not go up very high.

OP if they are aftermarket speakers I would go back and argue with them. Unless it is clearly stated on their return policy or receipt than I would argue for them to fix the problem.

They might of even reversed the polarity of the speaker.

What are the brands used? Also the shop could of installed used products but I can not say only thoughts about things that could of happened.
