An Idea To Improve NAV To Nissan
I was riding in my father's Chrysler 300, and I noticed that in the center of the instrument panel there was a VFD display kinda like the LCD one we have in the Z that shows various things like fuel economy, outside temperature etc.
One thing that the 300 did that I really liked was to show the next navigation action from the GPS. This was such a useful feature, if you change your NAV unit to show music info or other things you can still tell where to go just by looking at that little LCD display, and it is safer because you don't have to turn your head to look at the NAV. This should be possible with a firmware upgrade! Common Nissan!

Kool, unfortunately nissan isn't the kind of company that cares about customer feedback.(which is probably why nissan sales are dropping dramatically) You are right though, a feature like this would be good.

Oh, I misunderstood you, I wanted the next turn signal on the instrument panel, not the center console...

Sorry for my confusion but let me get this clear, your post title states "NAV" but you're referring to the little LCD display screen between the temp gauge and the fuel gauge?
The turn by turn and fuel economy is like what "awesomez" said, if you have NAV and you press info, it toggles and shows all that. Are you implying that you want something more that could show the Nav turn by turn direction inside that LCD display too? Kinda like what the Lexus RX has as a projected image to the windshield? (except it can be put into that little LCD screen? That's a cool idea, but I think it's a little too redundant if you already have it showing under the center console display. I don't know if this is any different on the '09 model since I got the '10 model and they did a NAV upgrade, but it think what they have showing in the center console is sufficient already and is very visible. But to your concern about having an upgradable firmware, I'm totally on board with that idea. They should have a firmware that can make our Navs be like the GT-R. More performance readouts I do have one huge complain though about Nissan's NAV....it's too freaking SLOW!!!! god dang it's one of the slowest factory NAV's I've ever used. I'd press a button and i'd get no response for more than 20 seconds. How is that even allowed? Last edited by scruffydog; 05-06-2010 at 03:42 AM. |

I agree, the NAV is stupidly slow. I don't know what the hell they were thinking. Maybe it is hamster powered. They should really fix the firmware and fire whoever was responsible for developing it.

Well thanks man! Without such brilliant ideas from people like you, where would we all be!
I am not sure what it is that you are suggesting, are you being sarcastic? Are you suggesting that I should not be complaining? I paid nearly 8 times the cost of a garmin to get in-dash nav, so I want to to be at least as fast as a garmin. I love the car, brings a smile to my face every day that I drive it. But I also want to see improvements, in every product I use in life.

You want a honest opinion, get rid of the stock nav system buy a nice aftermarket head unit, buy the dash kit for it and be done. This ya you have one of the best navs from garmin built right into it.

But I have to admit that there's are no aftermarket head unit solution that will look as nice as the stock one. The ergonomics, where it sits, the way it ties in with the rest of the car (climate control, etc.) Most of all, now you gotta worry about people breaking in your car trying to steal your headunit, unnecessary attention that will cause people breaking in your car. No thanks. I personally can live with the sound system and I think it's worth my money to buy the factory NAV over any aftermarket headunits - I just can't stand having the headunit as low as my shifter. Plus I really hate those 3 tacky climate control dials - it totally makes the car look cheap. I think Hugoneus's just looking someone out there that can provide a solution to either upgrade the firmware or some type of solution that can mod the stock unit to become better. For the people who didn't want to pay the price of the Factory NAV because they don't think it's worth it, GOOD FOR YOU! But I think for the people that went with the Factory NAV, whether if it's a Nissan 370z or like my friends who have Infiniti (which is the same NAV firmware), they have every right to B*TCH about the factory NAV because they're not trying to look for an aftermarket solution. Not to mention, paid darn good premium for it. The ridiculous wait time is just not ACCEPTABLE. If anyone were to put themselves in that perspective, would you be okay with that? Or would you find an aftermarket solution for it? Anyways, I think the point of this thread is not to say Factory Nav is better or Vice-versa. Hugoneus is looking for someone who can improve the Factory NAV. At this time, I don't think there's a solution yet, but I hope in time people will spend the time to write some awesome firmwares for it (highly doubt it).
