i want the camera to be on as long as the car is on, and off when car is off.... which wire should i tap to achieve this for the positive lead? im looking at the wires going into the tail light (orange, white, green, red, black) which i think would be the best ones to go for?

well it's only been 40 minutes . You may have to wait a little. Until the big (audio) guys chime in, I'll put my in.
But when Matt (bigaudiofanat) installed my rear view cam, we didn't tap into ANY reverse wire. If I recall correctly, power was feed from the red accessory line. My headunit has button where I can push to activate the camera manually ANY TIME while driving (of course it's auto detected as soon as I put into reverse as well). watch at 2:45 where I can push and turn on the cam from HU cam on with reverse shift What I am trying to say is camera should be connected via power accessory line but you should control via Headunit (not taillights or whatnot)

ya, wasnt being impatient, just started the install not thinking ahead, being 130am, was hoping to finish up soon.....
im actually trying to run the power in the rear since the wire that came with the camera isnt too long, and i dont have the necessities to extend it....plus, im not using a head unit, im running it to my garmin 5000 gps av in. i tested it running from the battery and it worked, so now just about figuring out which wire in the trunk to put the power too, im already grounded. i shouldve waited til sunday lol |

Glad to hear it, the red wire I used is behind the head unit as AK said. As soon as you tel the head unit that you want to to in revers or view the rear camera by hitting the button the camera will turn fully on and out of its standby mode.
