I was contemplating the same thing, in dash or on dash. I ended up getting a Sony NV-U94T Nav unit to put in the cubby. I stumbled upon the unit on Amazon. The thing fits so flush in the cubby you don't even have to mount it. You will have to drill a small hole for the charger though. I loved to looks and the functionality of the unit. But I also wanted a great hands free phone setup. With the unit in the cubby the phone quality is not good; the sound gets muffled because of the cubby, which is ok for the navi voice, but not ok for phone calls. Bottom line, if you are just looking for a slick looking Navi install check it out.
I decided I need more, so I stated looking into the in dash double din units. I really liked the Kenwood’s the best. However I could be wrong but, after my research in how the Kenwood, and Pioneer units mount, and after taking measurements in the store. I ended up ordering the Pioneer 700BT. The Kenwood uses a big ugly trim ring that will not work with the slight curve that is in the radio face plate of the base 370z. If you don't use the trim ring the radio will have big gaps around the factory faceplate. The Pioneer on the other hand looks like it's going to fit, without the use of a trim ring.

interesting. can u post some pics up when u get your pioneer installed? i didnt get a dvd/navi unit instead i bought a beltronics 995 laser/radar detector that day. i went to the store where im planning to get my navi and the installer looked up the metra-kits for the indash and there was none available for the 370z. he said he'll have to Custom make it via Fiber glass. he also told me that theres gonna be a newer unit comming out for kenwood. so i decided to just hold off on the navi and wait for the new one so i can get it with the rear view camera, new sound system (amps, speakers, subs) with the customized fiber glass all at once.

i'd love to see pics of your unit when you have it installed ^^

I am thinking of getting either the Kenwood DNX-5120 or the Pioneer AVIC-F900BT for my base when I get it. Since its a base, it should just replace the stock D-Din unit of the Z easily. Because its a new car, I will probably get this professionally installed. I mainly would use it for the ipod functions. not really a nav guy, but its nice to have when im not near the iphone...

Also plan on getting some alpine 6.5s to replace the stock speakers, still undecided as to the sub...i think a 10 inch would do well given the position of the sub in the base...

I have a question. Is there a product or something that enables the aftermarket radio to work with the steering wheel controls?

Yes, made by a company called PAC audio (Welcome to Pacific Accessory Corporation). They don't have the 370Z on there yet, but I hear if you call them up, they'll tell you how to install.

That'll save some money over the factory nav system.

Now, how about placement of the GPS and sat radio antennas? How can I place the antennas without disrupting the look of the car? Can I place them on the inside?

Default The Big Show!

After sending all weekend, it is in. And it looks spectacular!!! It's a Pioneer 700BT, and I love it. I did the install my self, with the help of the DIY that Tennesseez posted on this thread (Thanks Bro). The unit fits like it is made for a 370z. I did put two 1/4" spacers on the top of the mounting brackets to move the radio forward, for a more flush fit. I can't get over how much cooler my car looks when I'm in it. Everyone you has seen it freaks at how slick it looks and how much stuff it can do. The total price with everything, radio, ipod cable, wiring harness, antenna adaptor, PAC steering wheel controller, shipping, & taxes was $598. I did pay the local stereo shop to help me hook up the steering wheel controller, which is the only thing that fell short of my expectations. It works, but is definitely not a good as it was with the stock radio. I plan on calling PAC to see if they have any suggestions to better configure it to the 370z.
The thing I was most concerned about was the boot time of the radio. I can't believe how quick it is. Yes quick. By the time I back out of my parking space, the radio is always playing before I can even put the car into drive. Which I find is a nice feature as I usually turn down/off my radio when I’m backing out anyways. Now it doses it for me. The system is booted up and good to go, by the time I'm pulling out onto the street.
