370z in-dash head unit recommendations

Hi all, newb here.

I purchased my 370z last october and didn't get the model with bose and nav installed in it.

I love my 370z and plan on keeping it for a while so I decided I want to install navigation along with improved music player and such.

I am a complete newb when it comes to car audio, parts, etc.

Any recommendations for an in-dash head unit? I dont need satellite radio or rear view camera really.... I am looking to keep this under a grand if possible.

thank you so much!

Go to Myer Emco at Baileys Crossroads and buy the Kenwood 6140 for $714, might be able to talk em down a lil ,they had two left this afternoon. They go out of business Sunday.

Amazon.com: Kenwood DNX5140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver: Automotive

This is what I have installed with the iPod cable (+$30). The 5140 doesn't have built in bluetooth but the 6140 does. You save ~$100 and you can add BT for a little more than than $100 on the 5140 later. I would recommend the 6140 though if you like the bluetooth feature. I have my Jawbone on my ear all day so I didn't care too much for it.

The headunit itself is great.

bigaudiofanat 02-26-2010 08:25 PM

I third kenwood all of there double dins are great.

nooyyllib 02-26-2010 09:07 PM

thanks guys!

I saw ak370's installation and it looks AWESOME!

anyone know any credible northern virginia (preferably centreville/fairfax area) professionals that install these HU's?

It seems like a complicated process (at least in my perspective) and I dont want it to go wrong. How much do installations normally cost? I think I'm going to look into kenwood. But I'm a little wary because alot of amazon.com and cnet reviews of HU's aren't 100% positive...

I'm just leaning toward Kenwood since they use garmin's for GPS and parrot for BT. I dont know if any other brands are good in those two aspects...

bigaudiofanat 02-26-2010 09:15 PM

The only one I know is myself. Not trying to tute my own horn but I did AK's install.

nooyyllib 02-26-2010 09:18 PM

yeah i read. it looks really fantastic man. I wish i lived in NJ

bigaudiofanat 02-26-2010 09:21 PM

How far do you live from the Delaware mm bridge?

nooyyllib 02-26-2010 09:24 PM

i live in northern virginia.

so from my house to atlantic city for example it would take about four hours and half.

bigaudiofanat 02-26-2010 09:25 PM

I am about an hour and a half from AC.

nooyyllib 02-27-2010 02:07 PM

what do you guys think about alpines?

theDreamer 02-27-2010 02:08 PM

Alpine is a solid brand still, not sure if they have any good navigation units, but if all you want is audio/video then I would recommend them.

nooyyllib 02-27-2010 02:37 PM

hmm. yeah GPS is a key feature I'm looking for.

I guess you can't beat Garmin GPS in Kenwoods huh?

How much do normal shops charge you for installation?

speedfreak28 02-27-2010 03:06 PM

The kenwood really is the best unit available for the price right now

I am down

Also I still like alpine even though there gps is not top notch like kenwoods but I still like both brands.

nooyyllib 02-28-2010 12:47 PM

well matt, could you pm me how much you charge for installation? my budget isnt that big since i'm still a student.

kenchan 02-28-2010 05:51 PM

watever stereo you get, make sure you get one with remote control so that you can get a module to hook up to the steering controls AND also get a rear view camera installed at the same time. :)

while doing the rear view camera, install the rear fog lamp too.

How much better is the Kenwood compared to the stock 2010 Nav?

bigaudiofanat 03-02-2010 03:25 PM

IMO a lot, not limited to what you can do and the nav is made by garmin so it is very easy and clean to use.

dp11 03-02-2010 10:28 PM

Just a word of advice. The 6140 only has two sets of preouts. So if you want to run a sub with your system, you will have to give up your rear speakers. At least that is what my installer told me. I am going to be selling my 6140 pretty soon and upgrading to the 7140 because I can't get used to not having rear speakers.

xTIMMYxCOREx 03-03-2010 07:04 AM

Garmin nav is not the best IMO, I really like the Alpine based system Honda sells. It has the best UI for the countdown to a turn. I have used TomTOm, Garmin, and Magellan as well.

I have rear-speakers with my 5140 and a sub but I think the front and rear are on one channel. I can't fade to the rear speakers, just the sub. I also have a 5 channel sub.

bigaudiofanat 03-03-2010 05:38 PM

Yes you would use a Y splitter and you can run a 4 channel amp that way OR you can run your really small rear speakers directly off the head unit while letting the amp power the fronts. But as many people know my opinion on rear speakers I would rather not have them.

I meant 5 channel amp but I think you got that...what's your reasoning behind not having rear speakers?

dp11 03-03-2010 09:06 PM

I had my 6140 setup with front, rears and sub. But I couldn't filter the signals effectively and it results with a less than optimal sound. It always sounded muddy. Either I could hear words coming out of my sub or I had too much bass going to my front/rear speakers. So I unhooked the rears and now I have a cleaner sound...but I miss the rear fill.
