Best Bang for The Buck Sub/Amp for Rap???
Starting research to complete my system. Decided on a Zenclosures 10" box. For all you hip hop/techno/R&B listeners out there, Looking for a solid bang for the buck sub and amp.
I already had a jl audio w7 and the matching 500/1 and have also had a powered sub which i am giving to my step dad. So ive had everything from 1,000 dollar systems to 200 dollar systems. Over the years, what has everyone liked. Some standard choices seem to be various versions of the rockfords, alpine type r's, midlle of the road JL audio, Image dynamics, and of course the kicker comp vr. Feel free to chime in |
What is your budget? How loud do you want your bass?
The alpine type r's are great for bass but like a lot of power. Look at those and the Rockford fosgate punch stage 3's pr even the power series of them. Amps hifonics is going to give you a lot of power for cheap as will RF and alpine amps. |

My budget is maybe around 100-150 for sub and maybe 100-150 for amp give or take 23 or 30 bucks here and there. ( I am shopping on line so I should be able to get good subs and amps for under 200 each online)
I already have a w7, but its too heavy and requires too much power I need something that will run good at 200-300 rms, crush the beats and bass pretty hard, but it doesnt have to be at that w7 level. I listen to hip hop and trance, so this sub has to get low and be able to get cranked when Im feeling like putting the windows down and cruising. Not to mention, the w7 I have requires a cap so I dont dim the headlights, I dont really want that |
I would run a single 12 instead of a 10 if you like rap, r&B and dance music. A 12 will give you much more thump than a 10. As they say in the engine world, there is no replacement for displacement. I find this to be very true when it comes to subwoofers.

I think the biggest bang for the buck is some of the new JL Subwoofers they just introduced. The new 12W0v2's are incredible! I listened to them the other day and they have killer SQ!! They sound every bit as good as the higher end subs but only lacking in power handling and a "little" less SPL. I could have picked one up for $99.00 at Car Toys this weekend. This sub will destroy anything I have ever heard within twice that price range. Then get like an Alpine PDX-5 amp with a good set of Focal Polyglass Comps and you will have a KILLLER system!

I have used Alpine Type-Rs and they are very decent as well, especially thier 10's. Thier 12 is not as impressive though. IMO JL makes the best 12" sub out there! I have paid big money on some really high end subs like Focal, Peerless, and Morel and I still prefer the JL sound. I know others will disagree but I have used so many JL subs over the years and there is a reason I keep going back to JL.

I used to run a W6v2 powered by a 1000watt Phoenix Gold amp - my g35s headlights never once dimmed...
I think you could hook up a system like that for under 5-600 ... I would just spend the extra and do it right... especially since you have listened to both setups - good and bad |
IT SUCKS RESEARCHING NEW SYSTEMS!!! LOL
Each manufacturer has like 10 sub versions and a ton of amps. LOL Too many variations in rockford and JL audio....two of the companies I am considering. At least if I go kicker I know I am going Comp VR (the 12 is on sale for 84.99 at sonic electronix) JL just came out with new subs, the WX series, and they also have W0, W1 and W3 for their "affordable" line. Rockford has Punch Statge 1, 2 and 3. Then you gotta factor in 10" or 12". THEN YOU GOTTA FIND AN AMP. This is going to take a long time since I am a perfectionsit and dont want to make a mistake |
With the JL series, I have used them all and they all sound great. You can basically choose the series by your power and output needs. If you are going to run one sub and use 500 or more watts than you will use a W6V2 or W7 but running multiples in that power class I would choose the W3v3s. If you are going budget and have 150 to 250 watts than the W0/WX versions are perfect for that.

The kicker CVX is a great budget subwoofer. It gets crazy loud and is surprisingly efficient and accurate.
