Another Brainiac Install

1 Attachment(s)
I didn't take too many pics of the install but wanted to show how the finished product came out. Still working on rooting the tablet so it can power on when it senses a charge from starting the Z. I have a wireless OBDII scanner on the way that I will couple with the Torque Pro app. Next step will be subwoofers, maybe. PS-Don't make too much fun of my taste in music lol.

Congrats, it's a nice setup. It will take some getting used to but overall I like mine. I wish the steering wheel controls were easier to get working, gave up on mine.

I like that. I need something new in my Z. I wonder though, with that size screen, does sunlight coming in from above wash it out? I know I even have trouble with my smaller screen. I've considered putting a sunshade or something if I go the tablet route.

What screen/tablet is that, and did you custom-make the trim ring, or what?

Ok, I searched Braniac - I didn't know that was a brand name or something? I found this YouTube video which gives me some ideas.

I like this, I'm gonna have to look into it. Give us an idea on the cost? Like I said, I've got a lot of research to do.

<edit> Braniac tablet install kit is $299. Now I got more to look into. Haven't done anything new to the install in my Z in a coupla years, my older Pioneer touchscreen is getting tempermental, so this sounds like the perfect upgrade. Maybe for Christmas? I had planned on trying to get an 85" TV, but I dunno... we shall see...

I mean, 85” TVs are cool too. I also went with the MK1.7 electronics kit for $199 but it makes the whole thing very plug and play. Also factor in the cost of the tablet itself. It really gives the interior a much needed update. Also, if you can use your phone as a hot spot it adds to the functionality of the tablet.

I feel your pain. I’m not going to mess with the steering wheel controls. I’m still trying to root the tablet to power on at charge and I’m about to give up on that.

Cost Comparison to an decent Android Double Din unit with backup camera.
$450 2DIN 10"
$ 60 Backup camera
$ 30 Steering control unit
=$540
Fully functional head unit with backup camera.

$300 Base kit
$200 Tablet
$200 MK1.7
$12 Application
$120 Backup camera and over mirror display.
$100 RcJoyCon CPJexc – CAN IBUS Steering Wheel Controls Car PC USB Interface for steering wheel control and hrs to learn to program.
=$932
It's a bit difficult to get running and it's not designed for a car but more rigged to get it just working enough for using in a car. It does look very sleek though.

What will using the Torque Pro app show you?

i've had my kit for months, but no access to windows computer means no root. no root means it's still sitting the the box.

I run it to view coolant Temps, ecu mph speed, rpm cause it just looks cool, oil temp, g forces, and AFR. It's overly customizable, easy to setup, and easy to navigate.

I run the brainiac kit along with Radens micro controller to handle all the garbage navigation junk when I removed the touchscreen oem setup.

The kit has its quirks, but it far more robust than running base or touring junk. The $12 app brainiac sells is hot garbage. I csn provide a list of apps I run thst take care of a majority of the things you'll want to easy access to. Like split screen apps, volume controls, and brightness adjustments based off of time and weather conditions.

Here is my current setup. It'll give you a rough idea on what torque pro looks like.

I think I found an acceptable work around. I turned on the assistive touch control and programmed only one option when you hold it down which is to turn the screen off. It doesn't shut down the tablet, just puts it in sleep mode. When I start the car it automatically wakes back up (I'm guessing from the charge). It sat about 12 hours like this yesterday and it lost 2% charge. Might be worth looking into it.

Assisstaive touch works or you can give nova launcher a try. It has settings to allow gestures on the screen. I have mine set so a double tap with 2 fingers puts it to sleep. Draw a circle clockwise to increase audio. Counter clockwise to decrease.

I tend to go several days at a time without driving so I dunno if it will work for me. Maybe. But I'm probably not going to install the kit until I root it.
