Navigation Map Update Failure
So I ordered a 2018 North America map update for the navigation system in my 370z Nismo Tech (2015). It now repeats endlessly on DVD #3 with the following error:
The map update did not finish normally. Once you stop the engine, wait for 5 min, turn on the engine again and restart the update. I do that and it just repeats over and over and over again. Always wants DVD #3. If I try another DVD (or turn it on without a DVD) it says: The map update is incomplete. Pluease insert the DVD number 3 with the updates. Now the navigation system and the DVD update are OEM. No customization whatsoever. I called Nissan Navigation Support and they send me another set of DVD's claiming the first set were bad. No dice. It gives the same error. I called Nissan Navigation Support again and they tell me, "it sounds like your navigation system is incompatible with our discs. Go see your dealer." W.T.F. They're the ones who provided me the DVD. TWICE. How can they be incompatible? (version X9 according to the box) So anyways... after being on the phone with those clowns, I learned something interesting: 370Z Tech Nismo isn't listed in their system. In fact, the lady thought it was an Infinity at first, because she couldn't find it under Nissan. What they did find was 370Z Coupe and 370Z Roadster. So for the sake of simplicity, they're categorizing my car as a Coupe. I call the dealer to setup an appointment, and just like me, the Service Center is confused how a bad Navigation update is suppose to be their responsibility. They're willing to take a look for no charge on Monday, just as a courtesy, but I'll have to wait if there's a line (a freebie walk-in more or less). So questions: #1: Am I being ******? #2: Is the X9 version the correct one for a 2015 Tech Nismo? #3: Has anyone ever ran into a problem like this? #4: Should I ask the dealer to try anything specific to save both our time? Nothing else in the "infotainment" system is broken. The Sat Radio, FM Radio, Gas Mileage menu, Music Player, etc... they all work. It's just the Navigation System that's down. The DVD set included a firmware upgrade (Disc #0 it's called). As per their instructions I did that first and it was applied successfully (nothing changed except the firmware number -- no new features or anything). Forever stuck on DVD #3... with 2 boxes of "Brick-o-matic" disc sets apparently. Last edited by Nargrakhan; 07-06-2018 at 02:55 PM. Reason: More info |

Are you able to fully copy the contents of disk 3 to a pc?
That would at least suggest the disk is fully readable. I suppose it's possible the data on the disk is somehow corrupt and/or the hd in the nav system is failing and can't copy it successfully. Warranty?

I can copy both sets of disc #3 to my computer.

Past the 36 month limit unfortunately. Going on month 43 of ownership now. Looking through my old documentation it appears I was able to negotiate for the "Extended Service Contract" and it's checked off in the Buyer's Order. I have a Security+Plus contract number... or does everyone get one of those? The legalese is confusing as hell, so I can't tell... |

Is it even compatible with the altima? Not to mention you need the correct unlock code no?
If you have an extended warranty, let them figure it out.. even if it means replacing the thing.

An update on the situation:
I was able to contact another owner of a 370Z Nismo Tech online (his was a 2016 version), and he tells me the 2018 update bricked his Navigation System too. He was told it was a bad hard drive by the dealer, but after comparing notes, it's not seeming like that anymore. He tried to get his money refunded by Nissan Navigation awhile back, but was given the software "sold as is" cop-out. However now I'm wondering if the software was never really tested on the Nismo Tech lineup, and it bricks them all (i.e. they assumed it's the same a Coupe but it's really not). Does anyone know of a SUCCESSFUL upgrade of the Navigation System using the upgrade software on a 370Z Nismo Tech? Also... I don't think anyone should upgrade using the 2018 software. Always... going to the dealer on Monday, but I still don't see how they can help. Especially if the extended warranty isn't good or is a type that doesn't cover the Navigation (or the scenario of it broke). Last edited by Nargrakhan; 07-07-2018 at 08:25 AM. |

New Update:
* My dealership owns three location. He had to call his "star mechanic" from one of the locations to fix my problem. * Just as an FYI: the "computer part" of the NISMO Navigation System (not including the screen, plastic covering, or antenna wiring) costs more than $6000 from an authorized Nissan dealership. * The activation key is tied to the Nav Unit itself. So you can't share the DVD with another Z with the same system. Have to call Navigation Support to get a new key. * If you disconnect the car battery and leave it as such for 30 minutes, then reconnect everything and start the car again, it "hard resets" the Navigation System (and just about everything else except the odometer). First the Nav Unit will boot the Nissan logo and then just go black for about 45 to 60 minutes. Don't turn off the car. You can see the screen is "on" but its black... like the thing is getting power but not working. DON'T CUT IT OFF. After about an hour the Navigation System will boot and the GPS will center somewhere in California. * The mechanic thinks (he's not certain; just knows how to fix it) the update doesn't replace the files, but creates a new folder, then re-points the computer to the new files if it succeeds. If it fails (as obviously case was for my car) and gets a hard reset, it restores the old files but does so without showing anything. * Mechanic says this isn't his first rodeo. Someone else with a 370Z (he couldn't recall if it was a Nismo Tech though) had the same problem with a Navigation update (he couldn't recall if it was the 2018 version). From that experience he figured out the hard reset and not touching anything. * After driving a few miles the GPS will figure out where you really are and stop showing you drive off road in California. |

Glad you got it figured out. Would be nice if the system would indicate it's in a fail safe mode when it's in that mode!@#
So basically leave the car hooked up on a charger for about a hour until it recovers itself. What about the update then? Did you try reapplying or leaving it as is?

I believe you could also pull out the Navigation System. It just needs to not draw power from anything and fully discharge. The mechanic didn't want to risk scratching the upholstery or fiddling with the wires so he pulled the battery.
I really appreciate he thought about something like that. He clearly is a car enthusiast too. Gotta send his dealership manager a letter specifically thanking him. I'm just going to leave it as is. From what I can gather: it's either a common failure or just doesn't work as advertised. Going to email and call Nissan Navigation Support with my complaints to get a refund. I don't think their "As Is" laws apply in my state... also I don't think this update really works, so if they're bricking people's 370Z's (even if its fixable), they ought to stop selling it or make the software work like its supposed to. I lucked out and didn't have to pay anything because I had an "Extended Service Contract" that I didn't even know about until a few days ago. However I don't think everyone is that lucky... and to be honest, I think they brought in the star mechanic because the dealership didn't want any hassle with ordering and replacing a $6000 part that I wouldn't pay for (I'm covered until December 2019 or 75,000 miles). If I didn't have that, I'm thinking they would have made me fork over the $$$ for just replace the entire unit. IDK... maybe I'm just too cynical. |

I hear you. I'm still running the 2012 maps and have no intention of updating. If/when I sell the car, the new owner can do as they please. For my immediate area, the maps are about 99% accurate. There's been few changes/new roads. The UI is too klunky to find a point of interest so easier to just enter an address.
