Planning an insane system

I've been contemplating a system for my Ghia. Being strictly for show, I want to go a bit nuts.

What's the word on the street about JL Audio gear, namely the W7AE subs and HD line of amps?

RonRizz 03-28-2018 08:50 PM

good stuff, no doubt, but IMHO overpriced. There are many that swear by JL stuff, but Gear thats just as good can be had for less. In some cases MUCH less. Sign up over at DIYMA forum and post this same question..... You are guaranteed to get many, many options and opinions. There are members over there who have tried it all, and you are sure to get answers from people with first hand knowledge of the products you inquire about.

I'm using a HD900/5 in my system and I'm very happy with it.

RonRizz 03-29-2018 05:16 AM

perfect example.... HD900/5 100 watts x 4 and 500 watts x 1 $1000
Alpine PDX-V9 100 watts x 4 and 500 watts x 1 $500
Not knocking the product, just the prices

bigaudiofanat 03-29-2018 06:54 AM

Agreed with JL is overpriced, the alpine line IMO is just as good for less mulla.

I do like how those amps put out the same power regardless of voltage and/or impedance. Neat feature.

As does the Alpine. Its simply a regulated power supply.

The first "real" amp I bought was an Alpine. I liked it.

BoneZ 03-29-2018 11:22 AM

Looking at the PDX-M12. About the same price as the HD1200/1.

RonRizz 03-29-2018 11:32 AM

$540 at sonicelectronix.com

Interesting... Alpine listed it as $900. Much better price.

Jayhovah 03-29-2018 12:04 PM

+1 for sonic... I order most of my equipment from there.

BoneZ 03-29-2018 01:11 PM

The only issue I see with the Alpine is it's only stable down to 2 ohms.

... which wouldn't be a big deal if I went Alpine subs as well. What's comparable to the W7?

BoneZ 03-29-2018 01:19 PM

Msybe a pair of X-W12D4s and X-A90Ms?

RonRizz 03-29-2018 02:34 PM

are we talking 12's? and one, or a pair?

A pair of both 12s and amps.

RonRizz 03-29-2018 04:23 PM

Assuming amp#1 is for front speakers.....
Subs Dayton Audio RSS315HO-44 $156 each
amps Zapco ST-4X P $220 80x4 in 4 ohms
Zapco ST-1350XM $299 1350x1 in 1 ohm
all can be had on amazon

No, 2 amps were for 2 subs. 900 watts going to each. I"m not even thinking midbass and front end yet.

BoneZ 03-29-2018 04:54 PM

Those Dayton drivers look suspiciously a lot like CDT's...

RonRizz 03-29-2018 05:10 PM

The zapco ST-1000xm will do 750 into 2 ohms $259

RonRizz 03-29-2018 05:11 PM

ANd they are not CDTs, trust me. However......CDT has been know to re-badge other manufacturers equipt and sell as their own....

Those are rather inexpensive.

RonRizz 03-29-2018 08:40 PM

Indeed. The same Sub amp I run.

axmea? 03-29-2018 10:16 PM

I think audio gear is much cheaper now than it was in the mid and late 90s.

What year is your Karman Ghia?

I had a ‘65 in watermelon green...such a fun car!

Got any pix?

Quicksilvers 03-30-2018 05:40 AM

The JL Audio speakers and equipment etc. is highly overrated and overpriced. Alpine offers some quality products also and you will have just as nice of a system for your Z for less coin.

It started as a 73, but it'll probably end closer to a 68. This is pre-disassembly.
