8" Mid-bass in doors...
I have yet to pull the door cards off of my Z, and have only seen a few pictures of the speaker opening in the door itself.
How much space is there between the door and the rear of the door card? If a thick enough baffle is used, do you guys think an 8" mid-bass driver would fit without interfering with the fitment of the door card? Many thanks in advance! |
I'd just take the door panel off and measure it, not that hard to to do. Installed 6.75" a month or so ago, it was a tight fit for sure, but you never know, these mid's are huge, can't imagine a 8" fitting there.

no.

The stock door speakers don't sound half bad with a good head unit with decent power going to them, and high-pass them around 40 - 50 Hz. Even better when you low-pass them anywhere below 4 kHz. |

Main concern would be depth. Yes, you can fit an 8" in the door, with minor modification, and plenty of deadening. If I remember correctly, the factory baffle is about 1" thick.
The Bose setup comes with 6x9's in doors, if i'm not mistaken, so an 8" is definitely do-able. |

Mounting depth shouldn't be an issue, at least from some of the 8" drivers that I've been looking at. They're about the same (a couple even less) than some 6.5" drivers. The real concern would be clearance between the driver and door card as well as making a spacer that can possibly move the driver off center from the stock opening in the door to allow it to fit properly. BTW, I'm not looking at component sets, but rather raw drivers. Controlling it all actively via the head unit gives me a lot more selection and flexibility on what drivers to choose from. Right now, I'm just researching my options. |
I'd think it could be done, but the magnet will need to clear the hole in the sheet metal, and the excursion can't be so crazy that the portions of the cone not over the hole don't bottom out on you. If you were willing to cut metal, I'd bet this could be done pretty easily.
