Yeah, It's not my first choice at all. But I just meant I liked the fact that it is removable. Not trying to take anything away from OP.

Another thing, is does everyone want it "as printed" like what you see in the photo? or would you want alcantara on it?

I'm working on getting a quote right now for "as printed" with the current set-up for the Galaxy Tab S2. This will give me a good idea on cost right now so I can finalize how much I'd tell you guys what I'd sell it for.

As of right now, I'm probably leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and iPad Mini 4 only. If anyone wants it for a smaller tablet, they are more than welcome to buy it "as printed" and modify it for any other tablets that would fit in it.

Also, keep in mind that modifications will need to be made to the lower radio face plate (either the stock face plate or the metra face plate). I'll make sure to include pictures of those later.

Why don't you look at incorporating a small curb along that front lower edge so nothing needs to be modified. I think you will find many more people receptive when it is more plug and play - which is the reason none of the similar past efforts have really taken off.

Personally I don't think alcantara is necessary, though the as printed look is probably something I'd have to see. That said I don't mind painting something to clean it up myself.

the modifcations are for the tabs sticking up towards the back of the radio face plate. its more for the stock radio face plate, but even the metra plate needed some tab removal

I prefer a nice clean look / finish, I like the leather and or a carbon fiber finish.

I'd be interested in your 3D files so I could adjust and print myself a screen mount

In all honesty, I would have gone the route of a plug and play if I had a 3D scanner. But the high end ones are costly (30k to 70k) to get a good resolution and then I could scan all the parts that it interfaces with.

I also thought of a way to save the cubby and incorporate a system similar to the lid, but it was either going to be too small of a tablet/phone or too big of a housing that looked god awful to have there. I even wanted to reuse the latch mechanism, but after a few months of development I said @#$% it and went to integrate it into dash itself.

I do like the idea of a clean look too, but I think the cost will be an issue with some over that. So I'll more than likely offer two options: 1) as printed straight from the printer or 2) with alcantara (assuming I can find a fabrication shop I like and is willing to do this low volume work)

Carbon Fiber is not simple to do with this current design, nor do I have experience with working with Carbon Fiber, so that will be out of the question for the near future (never say never I guess, as I am starting to play around, but I'd have to make molds for this to work on this design)

After I get a feel that more and more people will want to look into this, I'll have both options shown in this thread before I make a thread in the marketplace for sale.

I'll also probably have to start off with only the Galaxy Tab S2 8" first and then offer the iPad Mini for others like yourself Wonka2581. I just want to make sure the files are updated correctly to fit everything and I'll have to get an iPad Mini 4 to do so.

If this becomes a dead project, I might be willing to sell it to you, but it you would need to have access to a 3D CAD software like SOLIDWORKS to make it easily modified, as that it what I used to design this.

Even if Nexus 7 isn't exactly compatible I'd be interested in buying. I can try and retrofit for my needs.

I'd also be interested in buying the CAD file if you ever go down that road.

Here are some pictures of the modifications you'll need to do on the stock radio face plate (and even the Metra Double Din faceplate as well)

Everything circled in red will need to be removed as they interfere with the fit and the face plate sitting flush with the front of the stock radio curvature

In the last two pictures, I'd recommend completely removing those sections as a precaution.

Also, credit to "Ron" for the first picture. I had already cut up mine and stupidly forgot to take a picture of the before and after with the tabs removed. Luckily a google search showed me the pictures I needed and i cropped out what I didn't need from his picture.

The first picture is the one I had been thinking about when I referred to a curb. That's the point of no return component. But if the bezel you're making had a raised curb along the front it could site right over that, without impeding the new screen in any way.

Bonus points if the curb can hold back a pair of sunglasses. That's the only thing I use the stock cubby for anyhow

The main thing is that tablets range from 7" to 9.7". Any tablet under 8" will have large bezels which will restrict the space that it allowed by the panel that houses this. Any tablet over 8" and you're getting into an issue with real-estate as well due to the nature of the screen size. We're all trying to retrofit a tablet we can buy off the shelf.

I've given up on the fact that I'd like to have the cubby for storage so I can have an elegant design.

I'm very capable with solidworks, autodesk fusion360, sketch-up, etc. I also own large format 3d printers and other rapid prototyping equipment.

The other option is to have my standard dash 3D scanned at the local maker-lab or college, typically they don't charge for the services.

I was hoping you were willing to help me out, I'm not looking to compete or purchase a dead project, I am just looking for a shortcut to completing a personal project.

Haha, that explains my pains with my Nexus 7 2013 in my Sportage for years, that and so many of my Nexus devices (tablets, phones) had a messed up USB connector.

Will never touch a Nexus product again in my life, think they're discontinued anyways

my nexus 7 always had an issue being recognized by my computer...and it was because of the USB female connector on the tablet...it was a nightmare.

Yeah, they did discontinue both the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9.
