Decisions, decisions........
Looking for advise . 2015 Z non Bose, have installed Lanzer Opti6PM speakers, they sound awesome, Powerbass L1-AI Dome Tweeters, JL Audio CP110LG -TW1 10" sub, Precision Power p900.5 amp, wiring kit with new wire to all speakers and the AudioControl LC2I loc, using the stock head unit. Stereo sounds awesome, love the big sound coming from the stock head unit, tweeters are a little too crisp and not enough adjustment to tone them down with the stock head unit. Wishing I would have went with a good component set like the Hertz HSK165 XL set, but can't decide between this or maybe a really good head unit that has a good EQ, thinking about the Pioneer 8100 nex.
What do you guys think, if you had to choose between the two which would be the best bang for my hard earned buck ? Thanks |

If I understand correctly, you have the Lanzars and the tweeters running off front and rear channels, and the sub off he sub out, yes? you should be able to adjust crossover freq. and level of your tweeters off your amp. You can tame them that way.

Thanks for the good advice guy's.
I will have to admit that I am still learning and have a long ways to go when it comes to tuning the amp buy that's half the fun! Sounds way better than it did when I first started and I know that it will sound better as I learn more . Ron, I am not using the rear amp channels , the Lanzars and tweeters are on the same front channels . The sub is from sub out. Would it be better to separate them and run the tweeters from the amp rear channels ? The way I have it wired now is with the tweeters and crossovers pigtailed off of the Lanzar wiring. Very happy with the Lanzar speakers and plan on keeping them but if I am going to be rewiring some things I would like to upgrade the tweeters, any suggestions from you guys on a good set of tweeters/crossovers that will work good with my setup would be appreciated. I think I have learned something in the last few minutes, correct me if I am wrong, with my tweeters wired to the amp rear channels this would be a active setup that will require active crossovers that will also give me a wider range of adjustment. I going to stick with the stock HU for now mostly because I like the OEM look but I think I will add a set of higher quality tweeters. One more question. By using this arrangement will I need to have a active crossover added between the HU and the amp or will the amp HPF do the job . Thank You. |

Car Audio Installer

Simply replace your audio control with a sound processor like the ms8 this will give you 31 bands or Ed adjustment and you can cross over your tweeters any way you see fit

This is true, but not everyone is looking to go balls to the wall with their stereo install. Average Joe does not want, or need an $800 31 band EQ, and dsp unit.. Some people want to find a middle-ground, and just have better sound than stock.

Well I decided to install a Pioneer 8100, nice HU. I wired the tweeters to the amp front channel set to full and was using the HU crossover. Pretty cool feature with all that adjustability at your finger tips but don't know if it is as effective as the amp crossovers. Been playing with it for several weeks now and had it sounding pretty good and then it happened, I blew a tweeter.
So now I have another decision to make and would appreciate some help. Thinking about going with a nice set of component speakers like Hertz or Focal but I am very happy with the Lanzar OPTI6 set that I have now. Should I purchase a better set of tweeters keeping the same setup I have and cross them with the HU or amp or should I go with the component set that has a dedicated crossover ? If I go with the Hertz speakers will my PPI 900.5 drive them ok and are the XL'S worth the extra money over the 165.4 set ? Thanks |

[QUOTE=RonRizz;3390647]what freq. were you crossing the tweeters at??
Using the HU HPF I had it set @ 12dB/octave and 125HZ. It can be set at the 6db/octave and up to 200hz. I used a DMM , a 50hz and 1khz test tone to set all gain settings , so I think I have that set fairly close. I do like the tweeters active and would like to keep it this way. The set I have are a cheap so no big loss, I chalk it up as a learning experience but at the very least I will need to purchase another set and want to go with a better quality set this time and certainly do not want to damage them. I am not opposed to going with a nice set of components but I have everything wired so nicely and am not too crazy about wiring in a passive crossover but ultimately I am getting into this more than I thought I would and while not to the level that some of you guys are at whit you system I do want a good quality sounding setup. nowhere near high enough. they need to be crossed at or around 2500hz or higher... If you cannot accomplish that through your head unit, you need to use your high pass filter on your amp.

if you decide to go with a new set of tweeters, rather than a whole new component set,
this is how I would handle it........you already have your gains set for the rear channels, So... with tweeters on amps front channels, set high pass slightly above what tweeter manufacturer recommends, and leave gain completely down. Get your music playing, and slowly increase your gain until you have your tweeters sounding balanced with your mids. Done. any final tweaking can be done on your HU's eq. If you decide to pickup a component set, it will have a passive crossover with the set, so the xover point is already set for you, and will be much easier to deal with. If you choose, you can always keep your lanzars in, and leave the component sets mids in the box for future use.
