I may have to hit you up for that soon!

#2 has the thinnest bezel

bullitt5897 08-18-2015 01:04 PM

#2 tint the windows and the brightness wont be a problem. Also you dont want it that bright at night... Actually you will want it as dim as possible so it doesnt screw with your night vision...

KoolKarmaJoe 08-18-2015 01:08 PM

# 2!!

It definitely does except for the lower portion which is nearly 2 inches.

As far as the night is concerned I intend on using the cars light sensor or finding another aftermarket for that. The tint will play a large role in the daytime visibility for sure either way, but with direct sunlight through the windshield it may still cause a few problems.

carlitos_370z 08-18-2015 01:38 PM

#2 here haha!!

asorg31 08-18-2015 02:21 PM

They trick you with #2 into thinking you have more real estate. If you look closely you have the white border and also another black inset border before you get to the active area.

Here are the dimensions from their website for screen #2 and #3.

Seems to me that number 1 is the right one to test with. We are sure of the problems in 2 and 3, but 1 is a maybe problem of false inputs.

I know it would suck to invest the money and have it not work but that's part of r&d. Maybe you could do a small kickstarter-type thing where we sponsor the final step by sending you $10-20 with the idea of getting a small discount when we buy the final product. Just throwing it out there

I have definitely considered some kickstarter like campaign. I want to make sure that I have a product to show before it gets to that point for sure though... I'm going to pull the dash out this weekend to get accurate dimensions on the width between the vents and overall height I have to play with now that I have a model.

asorg31 08-24-2015 09:19 AM

I've started picking up components to test for the build. I found an hd/am/fm tuner for really cheap. Hopefully I can get it to work with my system. And my girlfriend bought me a monitor to try for my birthday, which should be here by Wednesday!

That looks like it's going to be insanely awesome. Can't wait to see what it looks like installed.

I think this is going to be great! When are you actually mounting the whole thing?

Hey thanks guys! I am traveling back to my home state Arkansas for a death in my family so I will be out for about a week or so... Once I get back I will be sketching up the changes to the dash to fit that big boy. I am working with a sales rep with 3D Systems on a price for a print now.

See if you can find a local shop that will print it for you, there are usually many places that do it.

That bezel on the screen looks huge! What are your plans, direct mount or are you taking it apart?

Yeah that would have been awesome... But with the road trip I didn't stay in one city more than a day. We got to see some really cool stuff along the way. Including a Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg car museum and once a year auction. Also may have found a 280Z project car!

Finally after hitting Little Rock, Memphis, St. Louis, Springfield IL, Chicago, Auburn, Ft. Wayne, Columbus, and Frederick MD we are back home and back into the grind. I have some making up to do lol!:eekdance:

asorg31 09-08-2015 09:37 AM

The bezel is bigger than I had expected but I am going to do a direct mount with this one to see how it will work. Lol good thing with prototypes you get to try different things!

Yes there most certainly are! I'm making some substantial progress on integrating the actual screen dimensions into the dash. As well as adjusting the dash to fit it! It's coming along very nicely! What do you all think?

I made a trip out to the Tesla store with my UI designer last night to do some research on how well their screen works. And if you guys haven't already I suggest you all go to one of their mall locations and just check the car out. It's pretty amazing and their screen operates so smoothly. It gives me high hopes for my User Interface!

The design is coming along very well, I will post some more pictures once I get home of both the progress and the adventure to Tesla!

asorg31 10-01-2015 06:29 AM

Here is a few pictures that were snapped while we were out at the Tesla Store. Their screen interface was a thing of beauty, and it works flawlessly. It gave us a few ideas on how to lay things out and we are getting very excited start delving into the user interface!

I took some time out of designing last night to take a photo of my dash piece as it is now. There has been quite a bit of progress and I wanted to share it with the community. I bought a 370Z model from a website called Turbosquid, anybody into the 3d design field will probably know of it. It was a pretty impressive model and really helps to show of my dash piece and what it will actually look like.

As you can see this 10" screen is going to be massive in the space we have. Jeez I can't wait! I'm so close now to sending it off to get my 3d printed prototype!

Holy smokes! That thing does look massive, but it also looks extremely cool. What's your timetable look like from here on out?

LAVA 10-12-2015 12:11 PM

damn, that looks a hell of a lot bigger than a 10" screen

Hey thanks man! Right now since the only time I have to design is late nights and weekends, my goal is to have the prototype installed in my car by the beginning of the year.

Hahaha well it actually is much bigger. The overall size including bezel makes it out to be 13.5" x 8.875". And thank you I honestly forgot that I had gone with the 13.3" on the diagonal. So actual screen size is roughly 11.5" x 6.5". Still huge for our Z's.

theDreamer 10-12-2015 01:23 PM

My questions seeing it in place now is, what are your plans for the A/C control knows, looks like you will be covering them up?

They will be integrated into and controlled from the screen. similarly to how the Tesla Model S has their controls. There are boards out there called phidgets which allows you to take the analog signal (from the switches) and change it to digital (from the pc). The most challenging part for that will be the coding necessary to make it work.

http://www.the370z.com/members/asorg...e-research.jpg

Digitally it will look similar to the top right picture.

That would be impractical and badass! Sign me up!

All I can say is did you go to MIT or something? This is excellent work!
