There are a lot of printers you can pick up for that price but to print somethint 14" x 14" x 5" in on go would be more in the range of $5,000+
hah yeah i just started looking them up and only the tiny ones are affordable. We have one somewhere here at work but I don't have access to it unfortunately. Maybe ask around on here to see if someone has access to one that is large enough.

Try asking around at local schools. When I was in high school we had a bunch of equipment like laser cutters and such that students operated like a business. They'd make stuff for dirt cheap for anyone that asked, just to learn the skills. Also, the technology incubator I work in has a nice 3D printer and provides similar services. Just a thought.

OP - I don't mean to rain on your parade of printing a large scale one but why not do it in pieces and super-glue it together for the prototype?

smaller piece printing is relatively affordable and may help reach your end goal

Yeah thanks for the advice I will definitely look into schools in the area and see what I can come up with!

That is what I thought as well, so whenever I sent the dash out for quote with Shapeways and 3D Systems it ended up being either slightly higher or no change for 4 pieces vs 1 piece. I may have simply gone in the wrong format than they preffered too.

I will be posting a few more picks from my UI Designer tonight. Can't wait to hear what you all think of the layout so far!

Hey everyone I know it has been a while since I posted. But I did want to show something a little new when I did. And it seemed like I just kept showing a little of the same. So for those who have been following the progress on Instagram or Facebook you already know that the model is officially finished! Now we are gearing up for a trip to California!! Once we get back we will be proceeding with the 3d print.

We are still working with our UX designer and developers on the software side. As soon as we have our 3d print in hand we will begin the fun part of fitment (including sanding, body filling, more sanding and painting). We will use the current screen to test but are looking at cheaper solutions as well!

In the meantime I posted a short teaser animation of the final design to Youtube. Check it out and let me know what you all think!! And if you haven't already follow Valkyrie Systems on Facebook and Instagram!

So I have decided to design and build an In-Car PC with a larger than average Tesla styled screen. Granted there have been many threads on here for tablet conversions but in my opinion that is simply putting a band-aid one a severed limb.

So what I plan on implementing is a complete redesign the center removable dash piece. I will fill the entire space with a large wide screen monitor laid in portrait style. To do this I will be 3d scaning the interior dash piece to fit the screen exactly. I intend on integrating wifi, hd radio, radio, bluetooth, navigation, OBD-II controls, custom gauges, and dvd. With many other possible options still on the table, such as adding a driver facing camera to record your driving experience or with a wifi hotspot you could skype. I am also throwing around the idea of integrating the climate controls in to be controlled on-screen.

Here is a picture of the stock Z dash and one of the Tesla dash design. This is similar to the design I will be making as a reference.

I would love to hear from the community on this, and keep an eye on this thread. I will keep it updated with pictures and the process on the build.

LOL! Alright guys so after that brief discraction I have an update for you. We have been working on the interface! This is a very basic wireframe image without colors or climate features. We do have the audio up and the phone as well. Let us know what you think so far. And just imagine it on a roughly 6.5" x 11.5" screen!!!
