Florida May Put Loud Stereo Tickets on Driving Record
Legislation proposed for the 2010 session in Florida would make turning up the stereo a moving violation.

A member of the Florida House of Representatives wants to make driving with a loud stereo a crime on the same level as driving with an open container of alcohol. State Representative D. Alan Hays (R-Umatilla) last month introduced House Bill 137 which modifies an existing loud stereo statute to double the cost of fines and make the offense a moving violation.

Current Florida law makes it unlawful to drive with a stereo "plainly audible" from twenty-five feet away or that is "louder than necessary for the convenient hearing by persons inside the vehicle" when driving past a church, school or hospital. Law enforcement officers are exempt as are politicians who use loud soundmaking devices for "political purposes." The typical fine is $78 with no points.

HB 137 would impose three license points and boost the fine to $180 for a third offense. The addition of points will serve as a boon to insurance companies which will collect significantly higher premiums from ticket recipients. The industry has already rewarded Hays $16,650 in political contributions since his election in 2004, including support for his run for the state Senate in 2010.

Although state law already imposes a specific fine for loud stereos, several municipalities have written their own civil ordinances in order to impose harsher punishments including sixty days in jail, a $500 fine and the potential for thousands in impound fees. Passage of the Hays bill would allow these cities to add license points to the list.

Seriously though. If your stereo is loud enough to garner a ticket, you're risking hearing damage inside the car. Hell, there are times I think my stereo is loud, but when I get out of the car I can barely hear it.

I'm not sure how a radio noise violation or 'disturbing the peace' has anything to do with your driving record though. They could just increase the fines and that would be enough deterrent.

LOL ya if you visit caraudio.com that is all they car about is how loud they can get there stupid system. Makes me sort of mad and it's funny at the same time. That is one reason I do not go there anymore. All the are worried about is "hey I got metered and hit 89db's" big fin deal.

Anything like that does not even sound good.

Right on, Matt. Between the iPods in the ears and the thumpers, I predict a generation of deaf-a$$ people by 2015.

And who am I to say it..just an old rocker with upper-register hearing loss due to too much time in front of a Marshall stack cranked to 10.........

Ouch. Not true.
The true fanatics of car stereo hate "thumpers" as much as anyone else, because it ruins their image. Same thing as some teenager street racing and wrecking a Z, it ruins the image.
My stereo sounds plenty good and it's more than loud enough to earn me that $242 ticket I earned once. I got the ticket on a highway near the city limit. I was nowhere near a residential area.
I think these tickets should just have the price raised, not go on records...
Not all of us with loud stereos are immature kids trying to show off to everyone else. It is for the thrill for many of us. Why else would we enjoy going out in the middle of the country to meet up and play our stereos?

PS - Don't call us stupid for hitting a certain dB level. It's the same as cars and hp/tq. A quantitative measure of success or improvement. (Although I do agree that caraudio.com is a joke. Bunch of immature people on that forum)

That's lame... I hate people who complain about loud music and yes I have gotten a ticket for "distrubing the peace" via my car stereo.

Indeed, stupid people that were ignored when they were a child, just are trying to get attention. I do not believe for one sec that they do it just for the thrill of the bass.
