kinda like letting some 3yr old paint a canvas and display it at the art museum.

judges get all wow'ed by the artistry... :rofl2:

Wow Ron you are the first guy that I know that has DD speakers!

RonRizz 03-03-2015 04:27 AM

Sounds a little strange when you put it that way! There are a few in our circle that do this...what's even more bizarre is that the z is not my daily driver lol

kenchan 03-03-2015 03:21 PM

i can see that though. wear and tear on the speakers from just parking the car outside...add to that rain that can get on the motor.

RonRizz 03-03-2015 03:46 PM

lol.. something like that. everyone knows that a car is far from being the best listening environment, and the road noise in the Z, even with tons of deadener, does not help that matter. So I have a tendency to twist the volume knob far too much while cruising about. Just trying to save my ridiculously expensive woofers the additional wear and tear of my everyday bumping. I would rather replace the cheaper woofers.
Nuts, I know, but its my thing.

so i only have a AVH-4500BT pioneer in my Z, no amps. would the HU provide enough power to drive these lanzar speakers?

i dont play them loud at all, more for fill while waiting at the light. my Z's noisy already from the exhaust i dont need any audiophile performance. :D

RonRizz 03-03-2015 05:09 PM

Sure, Head unit power is fine. I can't speak of the sensitivity of the factory speakers. But I can guarantee that the lanzars are going to be higher. What that translates to for you is that they will be slightly louder than factory, which you may not notice. What you will notice is a great improvement in low frequencies, in respect to power handling, and extension (they will play sub-bass). That alone makes it worth changing the drivers.

This sounds like exactly something I would do if I don't purchase an amp when I upgrade the speakers. My question is would the base head unit be able to drive the speakers well enough to improve the audio quality? I assume they would to some extent, but I'm just wondering how noticeable it would be.

Note that I used to run a 10" sub off the head unit power using Pioneer's Front Image Enhancement feature and found it acceptable for my DD needs in my old Explorer Sport. But that was a long time ago, and I have not considered buying speakers without an amp in recent years. But I'm pretty budget conscious when it comes to upgrading interior features on the Z (I want performance before comfort). Also note that I have some real experience with lossless audio on a serious audiophile system ($25K Mark Levinson electrostatic speakers, $15K Theta processor, and $20K Krell amplifier). That's not at all what I'm looking for in my Z for precisely the reason that you have already noted - the car is not at all ideal for sound reproduction.

Any thoughts are very much appreciated :tiphat:

Ordered two of these tonight as per your suggestion. My current speakers aren't cutting it, and I need a little more clean mid-bass at high volume. I'll let you know what I think when I get them installed later this week.

You will notice a difference, I promise. Average Joe, if not listening for it, May not. The great thing about it is........ if you decide to throw an amp at it down the road, these beasts can handle whatever you want to send its way. I have mine crossed at 50hz, and 200 watts, and they are crisp and clear, with amazing kick.

I can't wait to get your thoughts, from the time you open the boxes...

No. These are listed as coaxial speakers, but they are NOT..... They are Midbass/Midrange woofers.

Corona 03-04-2015 07:05 PM

so some spacers then plug and play? I just upgraded the HU to a pioneer 4000nex and while stock speakers sound better its painfully obviously they are being pushed too hard lol. I only have base audio
