I'm not speaking of this one situation specifically. I can understand why some people think this is a good example of standing up for your rights. I, do not, though.
You say the woman behind him should have gone about her business, but it sounds like she was behind him in line to get out of the store. Now, the store should have just had someone else check her receipt or whatever, but that's a different matter. Yes, she was being a impatient and rude about it, but this wasn't a black and white situation.
You can say he was standing up for his rights. You can say he was being an asshat. You can say he was being inconsiderate to others. All would be true.
