The house I grew up in kind of had this. It was an old duplex built in the 30s, and the lower flat had a closet underneath the stairs that was masked by... another closet, lol. Turns out that protrusion we thought was for structural purposes was actually the access to the hidden closet, and we didn't find out until we tore down the front closet and stairway for renovations. There was nothing in the hidden closet, but it had a railing for coat hangers, and eerily enough, a standing mirror. This probably also explains the light switch next to the closet door that did nothing.
