It is quite acceptable and most common for people to refer to distance as "k".

As in, "I drove 30k last night looking for an all-night metric gas station"

...but yes, 30km would be the correct vernacular.

PS: If you were to construe that k = 1000 (9000 thousand) you would be wrong because small letter k does not mean 1000. Large letter K = 1000. As in "m" = milli and "M" = Mega. mA = milliAmps...
....but I get your point. Don't make metric slang comments to the imperialists.
